The Stylings of Gramma Swan

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

When I was growing up, my Gramma Swan (and Flora’s namesake) always had a song, rhyme, poem, or story to entertain me and my siblings with. In turn, we’ve been sharing them with Flora. Here are a few:

Sunday Sleeping
THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL WHO HAD A LITTLE CURL
BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW
There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead;
And when she was good
She was very, very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

HEY THEODORA
Hey, Theodora!
Don’t spit on the floor-a
Use the cuspadore-a
That is what it’s for-a

A FRIEND OF MINE
[Flora Elsie] is a friend of mine
She smells funny all the time
For a nickel or a dime
Because she is a friend of mine

TO MARKET, TO MARKET, TO BUY A FAT PIG
BY MOTHER GOOSE
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jiggety jig;
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog;
Home again, home again, jiggety-jiggety-jog;

THIS LITTLE PIGGY
BY MOTHER GOOSE
This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed at home,
This little piggy ate roast beef,
This little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went…
“Wee wee wee” all the way home…

THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN
There was a crooked man
Who walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence
Against a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat
Which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together
In a crooked little house.

RICH MAN, POOR MAN
(this one you sing as you count your shirt buttons — where you stop is who you’re going to marry)
Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar Man, Thief, Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief

THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
BY EDWARD LEAR
(my favorite–but since it is so long, I posted it on the comments board)

This is What I Can Do!

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Closeup At a little over two weeks old, I can: track objects & faces with my eyes and sounds & voices with my ears; reach out towards toys and people; lift my head and turn it from side to side; exercise my legs, arms, and neck during “tummy time;” grasp my hands around fingers and sometimes toys; roll onto my side; and perform the tonic neck reflex (when my head is turned to one side, my arms move in a particular pattern. The arm behind my head is bent, with my hand close to the back of the head, and the arm in front of my face is stretched out. If I turn my head the other way, my arms change accordingly).

Back to Work

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Today was Marty’s first day back at work after a two week “paternity leave”. He sure is going to miss his “Little Bean” — he’ll just have to make sure he catches the earlier train home so he can love her up before she goes to bed! Marty’s Mom, Kaye, is here for two weeks to help me with Flora. By the time she leaves, I ought to have the hang of being a Mommy.

Happy Chinese New Year

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

Family 2

Today “Little Bean” joined her friend Oliver Low at his house to celebrate Chinese New Year. 2006 is the year of the dog, so she wore an orange and red sweater with a cow on one pocket and a chicken on the other (she still doesn’t have her animals down pat). Flora brought Oliver a “Lai See,” a traditional red envelope with money inside, for good fortune. And in turn Flora got Lai Sees from Oliver’s Mom and Grandma. Oliver’s Grandmas made delicious traditional fare, including oversized fortune cookies (My fortune said, “Now is the time to try something new” and Marty’s said “Your talents will be recognized. Great personal satisfaction is your reward.”) and spring rolls with surprises inside (Marty got a Chinese coin which means he will come into good fortune this year!). Happy Chinese New Year everyone!

In other news, Flora’s “belly button” fell off today. I wanted to put it in Oliver’s Lai See for further good fortune, but his Mommy said no thank you.

Two Weeks Old

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

A Brilliant ArticleTonight at 10:50 pm marks two weeks since Flora was born. If I know my daughter, I’m guessing she will mark the occasion by sleeping right through it. Lately she has been staying awake and alert (and often cranky) quite a bit during the day and learning that nightime is for sleeping.

I have to head back to work on Monday morning — the end of my two weeks off. I’m going to miss going through the daily routine with Flora and watching her progress day by day.

This morning Amy dressed her in an Atlantic Monthly onesie. Flora promptly soiled it. Of course this should not reflect at all on her literary leanings. I’m sure if it were a Harper’s or New Yorker onesie she would have added some spit up as well.

“Bean” it is

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

“Bean,” and variations thereof (Flo Bean, Baby Bean, Little Bean, Bean Pie, Bean Bag, Beanie Baby, etc.) seem to be the nicknames that are sticking. Of course we also call her Flora, Floss, Flossie, and Flo … depending on her mood.

Gifts From Missouri

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

Yesterday I received a John Deere Tractor Rocker and a Lift-the-Flap Farm Book from my Great Aunt Barbara and Great Uncle Robert — they own a farm in Nevada, MO. When I’m bigger, maybe I can ride their real tractor! And Great Grandma and Great Papa Brittingham sent me some cute things from BabyStyle that they picked out especially for me. Thanks, everyone, and I hope to meet you all soon!

I’m Getting Big

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

Morning ClothesToday I had my follow up appointment with my pediatrician, Doctor Gebhardt. Dr. G said nursing babies usually take 2 weeks to get back up to their birth weight, but it took me just 11 days to surpass it! Today I clocked in at 8 pounds even (I was 7 pounds 14 ounces at birth and 7 pounds 8 ounces when I came home) and 20.25″ tall. In the past week, I have gained 12 ounces — that’s nearly 2 ounces per day! Doctor G. said nursing babies usually gain only .5 ounce per day. Because I am nursing so well and getting big, I don’t have to go back to Dr. G’s until I am one month old.

By the way, I was such a good girl at the doctor’s office — I didn’t even cry! Both the nurse and Dr. G. said not only was I a good baby, but I was a beautiful baby and should be a model! If only my head weren’t so eggish on the one side …

First Trip to the Mall!

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

Camo HatToday I took my first trip to the mall. Once Mom and Dad figured out the stroller logistics it was smooth sailing. I slept most of the time, but I woke up just enough to eat some lunch in the food court. Mom bought me some very cute clothes … I am officially a fashionista! Check out my hat — Dad made the tassels stand straight up!

A Goat and a Rooster

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

New!
Flora was born on January 14, 2006, which makes her both a Goat (Sign of the Capricorn) and a Rooster (Chinese Zodiak).

The traits of a Capricorn are practical and prudent, ambitious and disciplined, patient and careful, and humorous and reserved.

The traits of the Rooster should make her a hard worker, a seeker of knowledge, and shrewd and definite in her decision making. She might be a dreamer, a flashy dresser, and extremely extravagant.

My First Girly Girl Outfit!

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Grandma Kaye sent me my first dress and matching tights the other day for when I get a little bigger. Mom doesn’t think it is too girly, so she likes it, too. Thanks Grand K!

Two Aunts, One Weekend

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

Aunt Hanna

Aunt TracyLast Night my Aunt Hanna came for a visit and she brought me a soft orange blanket to match my nursery. Thanks, Aunt Hanna! Boy was I cranky, but I made up for it by sleeping two 4-hour stints that night. Don’t get used to it, Mom and Dad!

And today my Aunt Tracy came to visit for a couple of days. She’s been holding me the whole time, and I don’t mind one bit. Mom and Dad even left me with her for a couple of hours while they ran some errands. I waited until they were gone for five whole minutes before I woke up.

New Name for Baby Blog

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Sleep SmileMy Dad decided that the title of my Blog needed to be changed. Now that I’ve arrived and have a name, the orginal title: “Baby! Our first one is on the way. Find out what’s new” no longer fit. He settled on “Flora Files! Dispatches from the life of Flora Hergert.”

It’s catchy; I like it. (note: the Web address is still www.mhergert.com/baby).

One Week Old

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Clean!Today “Little Bean” is one week old. When I was nursing her at 4AM I realized it was just about that time last Saturday that I tapped Marty on the shoulder and said, “I think my water just broke.” I guess when they say kids grow up so fast they aint kidding. Anyway, Happy Birthday Flora!

I looked back at my “What’s This Baby All About” entry to see if she is anything like I imagined. She in fact is not a boy, like I dreamed, but a girl, and has tons of straight dark brown hair and blue eyes. Her eyelashes go on for days, and that seems to be the first thing folks remark on. She has at least 2 dimples and I swear she’s smiled at both me and Marty already. She definitely smiles just as she’s about to fall asleep. She does get feisty when she’s hungry, and for the past few days has had periods of content awake time after eating. She is indeed active … she can move and lift her head, kick and punch, roll to her side, and squirm all about. She does get the hiccups after eating, but doesn’t seem to mind the light. And since she was late, she’s not that impatient, unless she’s hungry!

First Walk! and Another Visit

Friday, January 20th, 2006

Walking in MelroseToday Mom and Dad brought me for my first walk around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, it was Mom’s and Dad’s first walk around the neighborhood, too. I guess that’s what renovating an old house gets you. It is warm in New England … in the 50s and 60s. I’m told this is very unseasonal for January.

Auntie Linda couldn’t wait to meet me, so she came by for a visit last night. She brought me a cool duck garbage can from New York City’s Chinatown. Thanks, Linda!

My First Flowers!

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

First Flowers Today my Grandpa Hergert sent me my first bouquet of flowers! Thanks, Grandpa! I bet you already guessed that my name means flower or flowering.

My First Big Day Out!

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

I’m only 4 days old and Mom and Dad lugged me to my first pediatrician’s appointment (I passed with flying colors), the drugstore (Mom loves to go to the drugstore), and the grocery store (don’t be duped by the new Mega M&Ms — they’re not that mega). Today I am 20.25″ long and 7.4 pounds.

This morning when Mom was in the shower, Dad read me my first books: “Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are” by Dr. Suess, and “Yum Yum Dim Sum.” I can’t wait to try some Siu Mai! First Doctor's Visit

I also had my first vistors at home, Brian and Eric. They brought me a beautiful, handmade quilt with retro fabric and even some orange! Thanks Brian and Eric!

If you were wondering about my name, my Mom named me after her great grandmother and grandmother, who were both named Florence. Their nicknames were Flora and Flossie respectively. Elsie is a name that both Mom and Dad liked. It took them a full day to decide which name was to be my first, and two days to decide if Elsie was to be my second!

Dad calls me Floss or Flo when I’m feisty, Little Bean when I’m not, and Mom calls me her little Eskimo Pie because I look like an Eskimo, or Moon Pie because I have big cheeks and a round face. By the way, I was born on the night of a full moon.

And the Winner is …

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

… Karen Leonard, who guessed that Marty and I would have a 7 lb 3 oz girl on 1/14/06 at 3:30PM. We’ll be contacting Karen to claim her prize … a babysitting playdate with Flora. Babysitting voucher can be exchanged for late night feedings at any time.

My First Sponge Bath at Home!

Today I had my first bath at home. Boy do I smell good!

Home From the Hospital

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

We brought Flora home from Mass General early this afternoon. Our neighbors, Brian and Eric, tied a bunch of balloons to the porch column to announce Flora’s arrival. Here’s what she had to say, “I love my homecoming outfit. The orange and green colors match the colors of my nursery. And I’m glad to be out of range of those doctors and nurses who poked me all day long. Plus today I got to take my first car ride (I find sleeping is the best way to deal with Boston traffic and Big Dig construction) and I got my first sponge bath at home, a real treat. Wow, day three has me pooped. I think I’ll hang in the papasan chair and get some rest for day four.”

First Vistors!

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Ethan and Julia Visit Yesterday I turned 1 day old and I had my first vistors, Julia and Ethan, at the hospital. I was pretty sleepy when they came, but showed off my lung capacity before they left. Julia is having a little baby boy soon, and if my Mom and Dad thinks he’s cute, he could be my first suitor!

I also passed my hearing test today and Mom took me to a breast feeding class but I slept through the whole thing.

She’s Here!

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Long Eye Lashes Amy gave birth to Flora Elsie Hergert at 10:50 pm on Saturday, January 14. She weighs 7 lbs 14 ounces and is 20.5 inches long. We are staying at Mass General Hospital in Boston through Tuesday morning where we’re spending our time getting to know our new daughter and caring for her. We’re overjoyed and still can’t believe she’s finally here.

The Nerney clan visited us today and brought Flora and Amy more gifts, including Flora’s first pink attire: a pair of pink and white leather sneakers! Thanks, guys!

Officially Late, but…

Friday, January 13th, 2006

Our little Project Manager missed its first big deadline … and I bet Dad will be the brunt of many jokes about that at SSgA!

BUT, I am having some signs that things could be getting started … I’ll spare you all the lovely details and will keep you posted!
