When I was growing up, my Gramma Swan (and Flora’s namesake) always had a song, rhyme, poem, or story to entertain me and my siblings with. In turn, we’ve been sharing them with Flora. Here are a few:

THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL WHO HAD A LITTLE CURL
BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW
There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead;
And when she was good
She was very, very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid.
HEY THEODORA
Hey, Theodora!
Don’t spit on the floor-a
Use the cuspadore-a
That is what it’s for-a
A FRIEND OF MINE
[Flora Elsie] is a friend of mine
She smells funny all the time
For a nickel or a dime
Because she is a friend of mine
TO MARKET, TO MARKET, TO BUY A FAT PIG
BY MOTHER GOOSE
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jiggety jig;
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog;
Home again, home again, jiggety-jiggety-jog;
THIS LITTLE PIGGY
BY MOTHER GOOSE
This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed at home,
This little piggy ate roast beef,
This little piggy had none.
And this little piggy went…
“Wee wee wee” all the way home…
THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN
There was a crooked man
Who walked a crooked mile.
He found a crooked sixpence
Against a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat
Which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together
In a crooked little house.
RICH MAN, POOR MAN
(this one you sing as you count your shirt buttons — where you stop is who you’re going to marry)
Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar Man, Thief, Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief
THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT
BY EDWARD LEAR
(my favorite–but since it is so long, I posted it on the comments board)
