Take Our Daughters To Work Day

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Although we didn’t know it, today is Take Our Daughters to Work Day — Amy had already planned on bringing Flora by the SSgA offices for a first visit after her appointment at MGH.

Flora turned out to be quite the commuter while riding in her Baby Bjorn. She took the train to North Station, then the shuttle bus to MGH, then the Red Line to Downtown Crossing, and finally, a walk over to SSgA. After visiting for a bit, she got a diaper change and a bottle in a 31st floor conference room with a great view of Boston. Then back home it was: the Orange Line to North Station and then the train back to Melrose Highlands. Amy said Flora even managed two naps in between all the sights and sounds of the city.

Amy got to see her old train conductor, Jack, on the way in. He was happy to see that the big belly Amy negotiated on the train each day turned out to be a pretty, little girl.

Flora’s Cat

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Cat Bassinet 2Nope, this isn’t Flora in a cat suit … it’s Flora’s cat, Sepia, who found a comfy spot for her morning nap — Flora’s toy bassinet!

You can see some of Flora’s hand-me-downs: the Eeyore my Dad gave me for my seventh birthday, the Curious George my grandmother gave me when I was six, and the big Raggedy Andy doll Marty’s mom made in the early 1970s.

Holding Hands

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

Asa & Flora 2 Here’s a picture of me and my pal, Asa, and yep! we really are holding hands — our Mommies didn’t stage this one bit! Unfortunately, Asa is moving to Chicago in a couple of weeks with his parents — and neither he or I are into the long-distance thing — but we’re hoping to stay good friends. And maybe I’ll let him hold my hand again when my Mom, Dad, and I go out there for a visit.

During this date, we got a visit from Auntie Elizabeth Shelburne (an Atlantic alum), and we all ate lunch at the Neighborhood Restaurant — the food is super cheap and the portions are huge!

New Hairstyles

Monday, April 24th, 2006

The Flora Hergert After trying several new hairstyles on Flora (The Mohawk, The Liza Minelli, The Donald Trump, The Albert Einstein, The Nellie Oleson, and The Old Lady), we concluded that this style, The Flora Hergert, is the one that suits her best!

Pretty soon we’ll be able to give her The Pippi Longstockings.

Flora REALLY Does Have This Many Hats

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

HatCollageR (And more!) After many, many, many weeks, my Mom FINALLY finished sending out the last of the birth announcements this weekend. She ran out of stock half way through and had to order more, then she forgot who she had sent them to and who she had not, and then it took her several more [spaced out] weekends to get the remainder signed, sealed, and delivered. Hmmm … I wonder if she was busy with taking care of something else?

Anyway, she sent them to just about everyone she and Dad know, and on the very off-chance that you didn’t get one, post a comment to request one. Despite all her hard P.R. work, she’s happy that me and my hats are adorning so many folks’s refrigerators — one fan is using hers as a bookmark!

Brunch at the B-Side

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

The Family Unit We had another brunch date at the B-Side Lounge today. This time we met Frankie and Margaret — Frankie turned 35 years old yesterday! They both gave Flora a good sniff and decided she had that nice baby smell. We sat in the round, corner booth near the window, so the light was good for photo taking. Looks like we’re becoming regulars here — Marty always orders the cheeseburger, Flora always has a bottle, and the waitress remembered us!

Three Months Old

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Naked 1 Flora turned three months old on April 14th. She has made great strides in her development. She can reach for a toy and successfully grab it without delay; she is very verbal and responsive and gets excited when she sees a face (or a breast!); she can lift her head and turn it 90 degrees from side to side; she can track an object even when it hits her peripheral vision or moves in circles; she is always moving her arms and legs and hands; she still hates tummy time but loves to sit up; she’ll read/look at a book and flash cards contently; and she has a “lovey” — a little giraffe blanket that she likes to cuddle when she’s fussy or tired.

First Road Trip! (and Happy Easter)

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

Easter Road Trip This past weekend I took my first road trip! Mommy, Daddy, and I drove to Rochester, NY, to celebrate Easter. Mom said I was really great in the car (I slept the whole time) — and since we left early both ways — I still slept through the night!

I got to see lots of family I already knew: Nana Swan, Uncle Greg, Aunt Tracy … and I met lots of “new” family for the first time: my namesake, Great Gramma Swan (aka “The Double Gs”), Cousin Gregory and Cousin Josh, Great Aunt Chris and Great Uncle Jack, Great Aunt Jinny, Great Godmother (and Cousin) Linda, and Cousin Geoff. I certainly got spoiled with lots of holding, hugs, and kisses! And I really thought my Cousin Josh was the balls (that’s a Great Gramma Swan expression) — he cracked me up several times with his silly faces and sounds!

We stayed at the Hyatt in downtown Rochester on the 19th floor and had a great view of the Genesee River and Falls. After we checked in and got settled on Friday, the extended family met for dinner at Keenan’s restaurant to celebrate my Nana’s 69th birthday.

Saturday morning Mom and Dad splurged and ordered room service. It was fun to lay in bed in jammies and eat breakfast. Later that day we went out to my Great Aunt Chris’s and Great Uncle Jack’s for an extended family visit. Then Saturday night we went to Guida’s for some Rochester pie — thick, saucey, and cheesy — just the way Mom likes it!

Easter Sunday we all met out at Great Gramma Swan’s for a visit — we brought her an Easter basket full of treats and a Begonia for her room. We later ate Easter dinner at Nana’s — of course we had ham and stuffed shells.

On Monday Mom and Dad took me to Mount Hope cemetery where my Grandpa Swan is buried. It is a beautiful, Victorian cemetery with lots of hills, valleys, pathways, trees, and ponds. After stopping at an antique house parts store, we went back out to see Great Gramma Swan again, and she told me all about her mother, Flora Miller. My Grandpa Swan used to call my Mom ‘Flora Miller, Jr.’ whenever she was fiesty, so the name sure fits me. The Double G’s thought *I* was the balls and I gave her lots of smiles and coos! Then is was back out to my Great Aunt Chris’s and Great Uncle Jack’s for left over ham sandwiches and macaroni and cheese that night. I had quite the conversation with my Great Aunt Chris, even if no one understands what I’m saying!

It’s no wonder I slept like a champ with all my goings on! Happy Easter, everyone!

Opening Day

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

Opening Day 12 It’s Opening Day at Fenway Park — which unfortunately has nothing to do with these photos. But the weather was nice enough for Flora to sit out front and eventually take a nap, allowing me to leaf through one whole issue of Real Simple!

Flora’s Goings On

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Wonder what Flora did this weekend? Well, she had TWO brunch dates. The first date on Saturday was with Julia, Ethan, Asa, Lucie Prinz (an Atlantic alum) and her boyfriend, Richard — at the B-Side Lounge in Cambridge. Between the two of them, Lucie and Richard have children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of their own, so they were experts at holding and feeding the babies! They even brought the kiddies some cool toys — thanks, guys!

The second date was on Sunday with newly-engaged Wally Blank and Marcy Fink at The Blue Room in Cambridge. Their brunch is delicious — a never-ending spread of breakfast foods, lunch foods, and desserts. It was Wally’s 36th birthday but HE’S the one that brought Flora a little bouquet of spring flowers. Thanks, Wally!

We weren’t able to snap any decent photos either day. I need to break out my old 35MM — that’s when a photo was a photo!

My First “Joke!”

Friday, April 7th, 2006

Big Tongue 2 I discovered that when I stick my tongue out really, really far, it cracks my Mom and Dad right up. So, instead of Mom and Dad entertaining me with silly faces last night during bath time, I entertained them with this one. Gosh, for grownups they are pretty easy to entertain!

Turns out that bath time is my favorite time — that’s when I am the silliest.

Pink, Knit Hats

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Knit Sweater/Hat Set 4 Today Flora and I met Julia, Asa, and Robert Moeller (an Atlantic alum) at the Sherman Cafe in Union Square, Somerville, for lunch. Julia and I were fashionably late, and Flora was just plain fashionable. She wore her pink, knit sweater and hat set (courtesy of Joan Cassidy across the street), and when we arrived home, another knit, pink hat was waiting (courtesy of Winnie Murry) — Flora’s first Easter bonnet.

Thanks 4 Flora

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Thanks 4 Flora M&Ms Marty and I got a treat in the mail today — customized orange and green M&Ms that say “Thanks 4″ and “Flora” courtesy of Marty’s Dad and Vicki — for some reason, they taste better! They also sent Flora some Chinese language tapes — now she can learn Spanish, French, AND Mandarin!

Yellow

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Yellow 1 Today I am wearing my hand-knit yellow sweater (courtesy of Atlantic alum Martha Spaulding), yellow socks, and a yellow barrette — you can see I am very stylish.

Woa, even my Bumbo Seat matches!

Baby Bjorn

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Bjorn 1 Flora is so big she can now face forward in the Baby Bjorn. Here we are getting ready to go for a walk around the neighborhood.

All the neighbors were out and we met the family with triplets (!) and another neighbor and his son for the first time.

The weather had been unseasonably warm and nearing the 70s — all the spring flowers and buds bloomed — but today it is cold and snowy.

Sneezes Are Funny

Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

Flora thinks sneezes are pretty funny — Marty had her in stitches last night just by fake-sneezing.

Hands down her favorite thing is interacting with people — she loves the faces, songs, and sounds they make. Recently she likes it when Marty sings the theme to All In The Family. Of course the Mrs. Binklesworth theme always gets a big smile.

Last night she and I had a 10 minute conversation — an exchange of gees, gahs, ah-goos, dah-dees, mah-mees, and the like. I think she’ll be a chatty one when she starts to talk!

Museum of Fine Arts

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

MFA Today Marty, Flora, and I met Ethan, Julia, and Asa at the Museum of Fine Arts to view the David Hockney exhibit.

Flora enjoyed looking at Hockney’s large, bright canvases. She napped while we lunched in the museum cafe, but woke up in time to snap a photo next to Botero’s “Venus” before heading back home.

If you look closely, you’ll see Flora’s first barrette.
