12 Month Stats

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Waiting Today I had my 12 month checkup with Dr. G. Despite my insatiable appetite, I weighed in at just 21 pounds, 10 ounces — a mere 1.6 pound gain over the past three months. Dr. G said I’m burning up a lot of my calories now with crawling. But I made up for my lack of weight gain in height when I measured 30.75″ tall — a 2.75″ gain and averaging nearly an inch per month! So how does that compare on the bell curve? I’m now just the 57th percentile for weight but the 91st percentile for height. Dr. G says I’m long and lean … maybe I’ll be a runway model some day?!

Dr. G warned Mom and Dad that around this age I might start to get temperamental. Little did she know that I’ve been temperamental for weeks! I mean, is it so hard for everyone to know exactly what I want when I want it, and then promptly give it to me in the precise manner in which I require it? I hardly think so.

I met the milestones Dr. G was looking for: saying words and babbling; crawling, rolling, sitting myself up, and standing; and feeding myself. She said it wouldn’t be long before I successfully got in a stance on my own, cruised along the furniture, and even took my first steps! I’m working on the standing and cruising now, and Dr. G. said 15 months is the marker for walking.

After my appointment, we stopped at the grocery store. But when we were unloading the bags into the car, Dad discovered I had lifted some blueberry kefir in my cart cover! Is that so wrong?

Fu Lian Turns One Year Old!

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Birthday Suit Here I am in my birthday suit — it’s the same one I wore the day I was born. Amazing how it still fits. After getting dressed, we celebrated my first birthday Zhuazhou-style. My first selection was a ruler representing sewing, which means I’ll be a good housewife (although Mom wants to extrapolate that to mean a professor or an architect), and my second selection was the paint brushes representing calligraphy or painting, which means I’ll be an artist. Maybe I’ll be like my Mom and be both a homemaker and a designer? Or maybe I’ll be a professor of the arts?

UPDATE: My friends at Transfar in Taiwan think that by selecting the ruler, I will become someone who works with numbers, and that by selecting the paint brush, I will also work with design. They believe I will become an architect or a designer.

My friends Dobbin, Kate, Isabelle, Andrew, Seneca, and Oliver came over with their parents to share in my big day. Everyone brought an Asian-inspired dish to pass and after grazing, we cut into my cat cake for dessert. Yah, it was super yummy! I opened presents after everyone left, and tomorrow when I wake up I’m going to try out all my new toys. Thanks to everyone who thought of me today!

Super 88

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Shopping at Super 88I went shopping today at the Super 88 market in Malden for my birthday party. It’s an Asian supermarket that has all kinds of produce, fish and meat (very stinky), noodles, rice, frozen food, and candy. We bought an assortment of dumplings, wontons, and egg rolls for the grown-ups to eat and we got some colorful candy for my friends who are coming to my first birthday party.

If you haven’t guessed already, I’m having a Chinese-themed birthday. It’s going to be fun. I can’t wait.

Teeeth!

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Teeeth! At long last, folks, we’ve got teeth! Two in fact, smack dab in the bottom middle. The inside corners of each tooth have broken through to the surface, and the rest of the tooth is just under the gums (detectable by white patches). That explains why Flora was so crabby yesterday and needed to go to bed at 6:30PM! Unfortunately, any requests to show us her teeth result in her sticking out her tongue, so we’ll have to wait until the teeth are a little more evident to get a good picture.

Seems like every day Flora learns a new “trick.” Aside from identifying various objects and body parts (her latest discovery are her knees), she makes several ASL signs (her own sign for stinky is waiving her hand in front of her nose), and says a handful of words (her newest one being cracker (“crah crah”)). Sound clip to come.

Flora’s favorite games are to put objects in a container and cover them with a lid … then take them back out and start all over again. And to play chase around the coffee table, where she says “Ahh Boo!” when you surprise her head on. Still fascinated by the cat, she makes kissy sounds with her mouth and pats her hand on her lap or floor to call Sepia over, but Sepia’s way too smart to fall into that trap!

Happy [First] New Year!

Monday, January 1st, 2007

First New Year (2007) What would a New Year celebration be without getting drunk and getting naked? Truth be told, Mom and Dad already drank the entire bottle of champagne before letting me at it, but the leftovers stuck to the rim sure tasted good. Here’s wishing you all a very healthy and prosperous 2007!
