We knew it wouldn’t be long before Miss Personality would insist on feeding herself. So we gave her a couple of practice rounds with the spoon the other night and then let her go at it by herself. She did surprisingly well with the “scoop-mouth” instructions, although the curried peas (yes, the child who won’t eat anything ate curried peas) were just sticky enough to stay put on the spoon. Let’s just say the “scoop-mouth” technique didn’t work so well with the following day’s yogurt. Flora was quite proud of her new independence, as evident in the last picture of the slide show. In other eating news, Flora, with a little help from her Mom, has given up all her nursings as of this weekend, and takes all her beverages from a sippy cup now. Such a big girl!

Spoon-Feeding
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007Ride ‘Em Cowgirl
Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
Flora got this Fisher Price Ride ‘Em Zebra (actually called the Fisher Price Baby Gymtastics Bounce & Spin Zebra) for Christmas this year and is just almost big enough to ride it by herself. If you look closely, you’ll see my hand spotting her from behind.
But she still has fun pulling herself up to it by the handle bars and making it whinny by bopping up and down on the seat.
Sledding at Sheepfold
Sunday, February 25th, 2007
With a high of 40 degrees and lots of sun, we couldn’t resist christening Flora’s sled at Sheepfold in the Fells. Turns out we weren’t the only ones with that brilliant idea. The field was rife with dogs and dog owners — apparently this is a hot spot for doggy play dates — and a handful of sledders. Flora was greeted by several canines who initiated her with lots of face licking. But she didn’t seem to mind. Plus this was a good opportunity to teach Flora not to eat the yellow snow. In case you’re wondering what Flora’s grinning at in this picture, it’s the nearly 25 (!) frolicking dogs.
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Friday, February 23rd, 2007Don’t let this sauce-laden face and double chin fool you. Flora has gone from Miss-Eat-Anything-And-How to Miss-Eat-Nothing-But-Cheese, although we’ve had moderate success with pasta and sauce. Jabba The Hutt or Donald Trump — I can’t decide.
I Can Climb and Stand!
Monday, February 19th, 2007
Here I am yesterday climbing up the stairs (that also taught me how to stand) when we went to see my new friend, Drew, and his parents, Jen and Craig. The two little steps up into their kitchen were just the perfect height to get the push-off leverage I needed while Dad spotted me. I perfected my new trick this morning at home, when I pulled myself up into a stance in my crib. I even did a little cruising along the rail, before I fell back down on my bottom. Game over, Mom and Dad. Once I get the hang of cruising, walking will be next.
Happy Valentine’s Day (and 13 Months Old)
Wednesday, February 14th, 2007Flora says “Eyebrow” Video
Saturday, February 10th, 2007Flora shows off her new word “eyebrow.” She’s fascinated by our eyebrows, so when she would reach out to touch them we would say the word. When she was sitting on Amy’s lap the other morning, she reached up to her face and said “eyeeebrowww” as plain as day.
New Vocabulary
Friday, February 2nd, 2007Wondering what new words Flora is saying now? Her latest additions to her vocabulary are “guys” (meaning any collection of stuffed animals or animals in a book), “beah” (bear), “clah” (clock), “jay jay” (the name of her Daddy’s boyhood stuffed monkey), “III” (eye), and “rah” (the sound a lion makes). She loves to play chase to the latter. Any letter is “AAAA” or “EEEE” and she does sing “EEE III EEE III” to the Old MacDonald song. One time she said “banky” (blankie) but hasn’t said it again, but she still consistently says “cah” (cat), “mama,” “dada,” and “baby.”
Flora Brushes Her Teeth
Thursday, February 1st, 2007Flora Eats Cheerios
Thursday, February 1st, 2007View Flora’s “Eating Cheerios” photos
Above is a slide show of Flora eating her Cheerios yesterday morning. First, she drops them into her sippy cup full of [stolen] kefir. She then wonders what the heck is that in her sippy cup — oh ya, it’s those cheerios. She asks for more (this is a different sign for more that Gram Kaye inadvertently taught her). And finally, she enjoys eating them the proper way.
ICA, Boston
Thursday, February 1st, 2007This past weekend, my Gram Kaye and Uncle Andrew (who I met for the first time!) came for a visit. On Sunday, we took them to the ICA (The Institute of Contemporary Art but Mom says it really stands for The Institute of Crap Art) on the waterfront in Boston. Although there were a few interesting sculptures, I preferred checking out the view. and my reflection, from the hallway connecting the two sides of the museum.
