Where’s Flora?

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

Flora got yet another virus the week before last (with a 103 degree fever and everything!), and on top of some hardcore teething, she hasn’t been the most cooperative subject for her blog the past week. But … that hasn’t stopped her from doing a few new things worthy of mention.

She’s really coming into talking, and sometimes mimics the last word you say in a sentence. She said “apple” yesterday, and says “ban ann ann ann” for banana and “bin” for binky. She strung two words together the other day when we were out walking when she said “bye dog.” She consistently makes her sign for stinky when she’s going or has gone poops (time to start potty training soon!). She’s been really great with making signs to tell us what she wants … eat, drink, listen to music, etc.

She is warming up to the idea of holding onto your fingers for assisted walking. She’s up to about 20 seconds of solo standing and tries to take a step towards you, which ends up really being a face lunge into your lap. She tries to get herself dressed and undressed but her only success in that department is taking her shoes off. She’s been initiating peek a boo with anyone who will engage her and waves hi and bye to just about everything.

And she’s really into pretend play. She loves to pile her guys in this plush ark she has, close it up, and say “shhhhhh” (’cause they’re sleeping). Then she gives them pats and her binky. Her blocks become stairs for her Fisher Price Lil’ People to climb up and down. And nearly any toy becomes a hat for her head.

But the best thing is that she’s doling out lots of kisses and snuggles! It’s very cute to see her try to do “fish kisses.”

Standing Solo

Oh, Hello There

Flora’s latest trick is to stand on her own. She pulls or pushes herself into a stance then lets go. She’s up to at least 7 seconds before falling back down on her bottom. And of course she looks to anyone in the room for her rightful applause. The slideshow below shows a different technique. She gets into position with my help, stands for a few seconds, then plummets face first towards the floor. If you look closely, you’ll see her new, new haircut — the one that I gave her this weekend.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Eh, Whadya Want From Me? Happy St. Paddy’s Day. Except I’m not happy. I’m too young to drink Guinness. And I’m not wearing green. But I am a wee bit Irish on my nana’s side, and as soon as I cut these troublesome teeth, I’ll get a taste of her famous corned beef and cabbage. Until then, I reserve the right to be as cranky as I want to be, and demand to be seated in any container I see fit.

See that crown on my shirt — I’m the Queen. Eh, whadya want from me?

14 Months Old

Little Black Riding Hood

Little Black Riding Hood turned 14 months old today. She celebrated by overloading her diaper once again this morning (the last stages of yet another norovirus), but her eat-nothing phase has seemed to end — at least for now. She has added several ASL (American Sign Language) and FSL (Flora Sign Language) signs to her repertoire (please, thank you, drink, eat, more, change, all done/all gone, i don’t know, music, and stinky is the running list), and “pig,” “cow,” “cooka” (cookie), and “got” (got it) to her vocabularly. And she loves tearing across the living room behind her walker saying “beep beep!”

Flora walks with her walker

With the help of Seneca’s hand-me-down Fisher Price walker, Flora bravely took her first steps yesterday evening. Amy managed to grab the video camera just in time to fuzzily capture her second trip across the carpet with Dad spotting … before she sat down to play. In the video, we think she looks like an old lady cruising down the halls of a nursing home — funny how they begin and end walking in the same manner!

First Finger Paint Art

We’re starting to cultivate Flora’s creative juices early so we can exploit her inner artist and sell her finished works online, like Koko. This one she entitled “Mess Hands More.” But as her grandparents noted, until Flora learns not to taste-test each and every art supply, she’ll have to simply be known as “the artist with binky.”

Playdate With Boulton and Porter

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Porter and Flora Show Their Toys At long last Flora is reunited with her pals Boulton and Porter — they haven’t seen each other since Flora and Porter were newborns! Porter is just one month older than Flora and we suspect the two of them will cause quite a ruckus or two in their teen years. And Boulton doesn’t seem to mind the younger ladies (see slideshow), as Flora is almost one whole year younger!

First Haircut

First Haircut 2

The “wild woman” hairdo Flora had been sporting just didn’t work anymore. So yesterday we took her to Great Cuts in Saugus for her first haircut. After chatting up all the folks in the waiting room, Flora got her chance in front of the mirrors. We opted for the the “clean-it-up” cut, which amounted to about a thimble full of hair removal and a blow dry. But, her new hair growth (lighter and curlier) that is coming in underneath the old hair (darker and straighter) is better blended, and her bangs don’t completely cover her face.

Art Is Fun … And Tasty

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

Eating Play Doh Flora discovered that it is actually more fun to eat the art supplies than it is to play with them. Apparently the saltiness of the Play Doh is just too tasty to resist, however, that doesn’t explain why the paint brush was equally delicious.
