Pimp Owen’s Ride and Really Walking

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Little Tikes Car 4 Mom and Dad took me down to Padanaram, MA to visit Dave, Mandy, and Owen. It’s been a whole year since we’ve seen them … and since Owen has stopped by to mow the back yard! We ate hot dogs with lots of catsup, group-sang “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes,” checked out the barn Dad helped raise (home of the gilded elk head), oggled baby Ava for the first time (she belongs to Lee and Kristen), but best of all Owen shared all his toys. I loved his sandbox and his car the best.

I’m walking a ton these days, but I still haven’t declared it my solo mode of transportation. But Mom and Dad are declaring this weekend as the official weekend where I really started walking the majority of the time. I stand up, walk, fall down, stand up, walk, over and over again. I can travel pretty far! But I’ll still speed-crawl if I need to get to something really quickly. And as far as talking goes, I say a few new words every day — fascinating how every object and action has a name!

Flora al Fresco, La Bodega 1

The only thing better than eating is eating with a cool wind on your face! Here I am dining al fresco at La Bodega in Kansas City. In between big bites of black bean soup, I said Hi to each and every passerby, and squealed each time a big truck rolled by.

Visiting Family in MO

Cubbage Farm

Me, Mom, and Dad took a road trip to Nevada, MO (a couple hours South of Kansas City) to visit the Brittingham side of the family. At last I got to visit Cubbage Farm … complete with big tractors, rolling fields of corn, and farm animals down the road! Great Aunt Barbara, Cousin Steven, and I posed in front of their retro-cool sign.

But the real reason we visited Kansas City was to congratulate Uncle Andrew on his graduation from the Kansas City Art Institute. I didn’t get to go to the ceremony, but I attended several parties in Andrew’s honor, where I sampled Grandpa David’s famous BBQ for the first time (I like the sauce the best), played with Cousin Brandon, visited with Dad’s old friends, met (and of course showed off) for lots of new people, and shared all the awesome toys (how does a 6 foot long stuffed caterpillar sound?) I had waiting for me when I arrived.

Sheep Licking Flora

During our recent trip to Missouri, Flora visited the Kansas City Zoo in Swope Park. She stroked a snake; made a wish in the waterfall; gave the goats, deer, and sheep kibble; traveled on a train; and oggled all kinds of animals including tigers, zebras, hippos, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, koalas, camels, and much more! Spring was in the air, and the animals were definitely feelin’ it … and feelin’ each other. The camels, zebras, and rhinos were all “playing a game,” as one Mom explained it to her little ones.

16 Months Old

Playing

Today I am 16 months old. My favorite game is to hide … hide behind my hands, behind my toys, behind my blanky, behind the furniture, even hide in the corner. Peekaboo is so fun, and it never gets old. Hiding things inside and under blocks and boxes is equally as fun, and sometimes Mom plays a game where I have to guess which block or box the thing is under. I also like to scooch and inch my bottom onto an exact location of my liking, for instance, right in the middle of the heat grate or right on top of a toy … and not a centimeter to the left or to the right. Watch out or I’ll scooch my bottom right onto your lap! I’m still working on making walking my primary mode of transportation, but I can do it for a few feet when I want to. And I’ve gotten really good at mimicking just about any sound or word, particularly if it ends a sentence. The other day I said “papaya!”

Hey, Gilligan (Pleasant Lake, NH)

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

Flora in Life Vest Marty, Flora, and I joined our friends, The Nerneys, at their cottage on Pleasant Lake in New Hampshire this weekend. Flora got to play on the beach with Will and Jack (plus Chilly the dog!), eat not dogs with lots and lots of catsup, cruise along the built-in deck bench and climb up and down the stairs, play on the playground, and hike on Marty’s shoulders through the Esther Currier wildlife area. She also got to practice walking across the living room carpet.

And she’s off …

Today, at the sitter’s house, Flora walked from one side of the living room to the other to get a big ball. Her steps were tiny, quick, and numbered nearly 10-15!

Cinco De Mayo 2007

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Flora and Tulips Flora put on her best Cinco De Mayo dress (her friend Lily brought this one all the way from London!), some pigtails, and her new shoes, and headed next door to Brian and Eric’s house for a celebration.

She got to say Hi to lots of new people, eat spicy Mexican food, explore their backyard, and even play with a new friend.

Three

Flora has three new words: buhbuh (bubble), pea-sah (pizza), and hah (hot) … and she has taken three walking steps unassisted, before falling down!
