And the third best thing about Cape Cod was the food. Dad averaged about two pounds of fresh seafood a day, for a grand vacation tally of fourteen pounds (yes, he kept track!). I’m not big enough to try seafood, but I had my share of roadside fare from Kate’s, Cobie’s, The Brewster Coffee Shop, and the Brewster Store (you know, healthy stuff like hot dogs, french fries with “ee-yup” (catsup), donuts, and ice cream). We toasted Mom and Dad’s fourth wedding anniversary at The Lobster Claw in Orleans — we wanted to go to Land Ho but apparently so did everyone else on the Cape.

“Go! Eat!”
Friday, August 31st, 2007“Go! Bike!”
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007The second best thing about Cape Cod? Riding bikes along the Cape Cod Rail Trail and in Nickerson State Park. I wasn’t sold on the helmet at first (ergo, the binky), but once we got going, I was having so much fun I forgot all about it. In fact, one time when we went for a bike ride, I slumped forward and fell asleep — the cool breeze and smooth motion was just too relaxing!
“Go! Beatsh!”
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007Want to know the best part about Cape Cod? The “Beatsh!” Brewster has eight public beaches and more than fifty ponds, and we managed to visit a bunch of them (Point of Rocks, Paine’s Creek, Linnell Landing, Long Pond, and Breakwater) — sometimes more than one in a single day! Playing in the sand and bay-side surf was super fun, and sometimes we dug a big hole and filled it up with “di-dah” (water) to make my very own beach tub. When the tide rolled out, we could walk out on the flats for miles — splashing in puddles and spying hermit crabs, fishies, and shells.
Cape Cod 2007
Monday, August 27th, 2007This year Mom, Dad, and I spent our vacation week on the Cape in a town called Brewster — a lovely little mid-Cape town along Route 6A known as the “Sea Captain’s Town.” Here I am doing my best Jackie O impression at Paine’s Creek Beach. We’ll be posting about all our adventures over the next few days, so stay tuned. If you can’t wait, view all our vacation photos below.
Ginn Playground
Sunday, August 19th, 2007Mom, Dad, and I discovered a new playground in Winchester after getting a short-style haircut at the salon. My favorite part? The cherry lollipop for sitting still in the barber chair and all the different slides at Ginn Playground.
19 Months Old
Tuesday, August 14th, 2007
I celebrated my 19 month old birthday by first getting sunscreen in my eyes at daycare (thus the squinting … and Mom being mad) and then heading over to the lawn of the Beebe Estate in Melrose for an NSFN concert by David Polansky. Me and my friends cut the rug to such favorites as “Itsy, Bitsy Spider,” “Hokey Pokey,” and “Old MacDonald.” But my new favorite song is “A Tisket, A Tasket” … especially the part at the end where a little girl picks it up and puts it in her “Pockey!”
Breakheart Reservation Pearce Lake
Sunday, August 12th, 2007
I’ve been to Breakheart Reservation plenty of times for walking, but Mom and Dad finally took me there to swim in Pearce Lake. As I’ve grown an intense aversion to cold water, I protested as soon as we approached the beach. But with a little coaxing, I soon discovered that the water was warm, the sand was squishy, and it was a lot of fun! I especially liked watching the ducks and geese swim in the shallows and waddle along the shore. And of course staying true to being a toddler, I then protested getting out. In case you had any doubts, it is still my way or the highway.
Flora’s Voice Message
Sunday, August 12th, 2007Flora got a hold of my cell phone this morning, and after pressing a sequence of buttons and having a conversation, I realized she had actually recorded a voice note, which I then sent to Amy’s phone. Here is what Flora had to say.
Edward Hopper Exhibit at the MFA
Saturday, August 11th, 2007Marty and I renewed our Museum of Fine Arts membership just in time to catch the Edward Hopper exhibit before it closes next week. Phew! Soon-to-be-newlyweds Elizabeth Shelburne and Mike DeMichelle joined us and afterwards we all ate lunch at The Squealing Pig in Roxbury Crossing. Flora was a little punky at the museum and enjoyed looking at the crowd more than the paintings, but was quick to shout out “Butt! Butt!” when she spied Hopper’s Night Windows.
NEW ADDRESS
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007Starting today, I have a new address. I haven’t moved houses, just got myself a new URL. You can now find the Flora Files! at http://www.mhergert.com/flora. You will be automatically sent here if you visit http://www.mhergert.com/baby. Please update your bookmarks and let Mom or Dad know if you see anything out of order. Moving is messy, I hear, and sometimes things even get lost!
In other news, I graduated to the Caterpillar Room at school. I had a great first day digging in the sandbox, playing with puppets, and dancing to The Wiggles. I almost always cry when Mom drops me off at school, but today I didn’t even cry a little!
