Flora has picked up a few funny expressions lately, and somehow she knows just when and where to use them. Choice phrases include: Exactly!, Oh My God!, Jesus!, and Dammit! I am to blame for the latter — the other day I dropped something from the fridge and said “Dammit!” So yesterday morning, when Flora was pulling a book from a pile and one fell on the floor, she pointed to the book and said, “Dammit!” Sigh. Well, anyone who knows me well should be thrilled that it was only Dammit! and not the word I really wanted to say.

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008Seneca’s Third Birthday Party
Sunday, February 24th, 2008Seneca turned three years old on the 7th, but we celebrated a little later at Perpetual Motion last Saturday. Located in an old mill building in Lowell, it is an indoor play space full of climbing structures, riding structures, slides, ball pits, swings, a sandbox, puppets, a doll house, and more! After playing for a bit (I liked the puppets, doll house, and sandbox the best!), we got to eat princess cake and watch Seneca open presents. Then we went back to Seneca’s house to play with Moosey and eat some pizza. Happy Birthday, Seneca!
Swimming at the YMCA
Saturday, February 23rd, 2008Today was Flora’s last swimming class of this session (we signed her up for the next session) and the non-participating parents (i.e. me) got to go and watch from the sidelines. Flora did a great job kicking her feet, reaching and splashing with her her arms, and floating on her back and belly. She is learning basic swimming techniques like these, and holding her breath, through songs and games.
Paper Shredder
Thursday, February 21st, 2008Last night when we got home from daycare, Flora was playing with my wallet. After fumbling with some receipts, she plucked my license out to “see Mommy.” “Sure,” I said. I briefly turned away to check something on my desk, and heard a familiar “RRRRRRR” sound. I looked over to discover that Flora had introduced “Mommy” to the paper shredder. Sigh. But, by the looks of this 10-year old picture, I’m definitely due for an updated glamor shot in September when it expires.
“Caterpillar Soft!”
Monday, February 18th, 2008Leave it to me to pick the one 60 degree day in winter to commit to working. Sigh. But Marty was off from work today, and we did manage to get outside after nap for a walk around the block and some nature exploration. Flora collected pine cones and discovered that a caterpillar is soft … and tickles.
Flora’s Valentine’s Day Pizza
Saturday, February 16th, 2008Happy Valentine’s Day (and 25 Months Old)!
Thursday, February 14th, 2008So Mom made these half-moon, pink and white, sugar cookies with candy sprinkles for my big Valentine’s Day party at school today, and I had to test them out last night. Can you say, “MMMMM, frosting?” We’re going to continue the Valentine’s celebration tonight by making pizzas for dinner, and then chocolate fondue this weekend. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day! XOXO!

Number Two is hardly getting enough press on Flora Files, so we snapped this quick photo when we got back from sledding. Right now Flora’s little sibling clocks in at around 10.9 inches long and weighs almost 1 pound — that’s about the size of a spaghetti squash! Speaking of squash, Number Two sure likes to eat — it kicks and rolls like a ninja after every meal. My OB, Dr. Wu, always comments on the strong heart beat and active nature, so we’re expecting this one to come out running. Pray for our sanity!
Sledding at Mt. Hood
Sunday, February 10th, 2008We took advantage of a brief sunny period between snowstorms and went sledding at Mt. Hood in Melrose this morning. I think this photo says it all — Flora was laughing SO hard that her head was thrown back in sheer delight, and at times, no sound was coming out of her mouth! We went up hills, down hills, made figure eights, and took a break to build a big snowman. Afterwards, we warmed up with hot chocolate and chicken soup at Blues Diner.
Sleepover at Seneca’s
Saturday, February 2nd, 2008Flora had her first sleepover at Seneca’s house while Marty and I made the most of our first time away together. We stayed overnight at a hotel in historic Lowell (an old Mill town on the Merrimac River), ate a leisurely dinner at Ricardo’s Cafe Trattoria, and opted for late check-out at the Doubletree to sleep in.
Flora and Seneca had a great time playing together and somehow managed not to drive Hanna too crazy. Plus, Flora got to play with all new-to-her toys and stuffed animals and try spaghetios for the first time (the verdict: Yum!). Here the girls show Moosey some love.
A BIG thanks to Hanna for taking such good care of Flora and affording Marty and I a night away.
