Two Firsts

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Mom discovered that my right tooth finally broke through when I was nursing in the night. I can’t say she was overjoyed by the arrival of my very first tooth, but c’mon, aren’t teeth for biting? We’ll post pictures when it is a little more prominent. And later that day, Mom and Dad took me out for my first haircut at Nicolo Salon — that’s where Mom and Flora get theirs coifed. I sat still while Cristen cleaned up my longish locks, as I was more occupied with flirting than the hair cutting. Here’s the final result.

Seven Months Old

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Seems to me that Charley is going to be an energetic and affectionate little boy. He is obsessed with trying to pull himself up on anything and everything, and has made it all the way up onto his knees, where he bounces, bounces, bounces. He can’t sit still for long before leaning backwards, forwards, or sideways — getting himself into various predicaments like wedged half under a table or chair, or worse yet, involuntary tummy time. When he is on his bum or belly, he bobs up and down in hopes to go, go, go. Lately, he’s been talking a ton, initiating raspberries, clapping his hands in excitement, and is fascinated with his individual finger movements. He loves playing peek-a-boo and any kind of bouncing/bopping, and is almost always smiling or laughing. Plus, he’s been planting lots of slobbery kisses and giving tight little hugs all on his own accord. And yep, he is as big as ever — in the process of moving up to size 12-18 months clothes!

LAST NIGHT BEFORE BED
Marty: “Flora, do you want Koko in the bed or in your chair?”
Flora: “I told Koko I want him to sleep in the bed next to me, but he told me No, he doesn’t want to. And then like three minutes later he said Dammit.”

THIS MORNING IN THE CAR
Flora: “Who’s talking?”
Me: “The radio.”
Flora: “What are they talking about?”
Me: “We have a new president. He’s the first African-American president, and that’s really great for our country.”
Flora: “Can I open it?”
Me: “Open what?”
Flora: “The new present.”

Birthday Traditions

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Every year for Flora’s birthday, we’ve taken her picture in this Eames- inspired chair I rescued from my father’s things, to chronicle how she’s grown and changed with the passing time. And Gram Kaye has been supplying the too sweet birthday dresses. So as not to break with tradition, Marty and I made her the special requested cake — Koko the gorilla — by cutting sheets of cake and decorating them by hand. This year Flora reminded me of Alice in Wonderland — classically polished and pretty! Click to see Flora’s two year chair photo and bear cake, and one year chair photo and cat cake.

Three Year Checkup

Friday, January 16th, 2009

This morning Flora had her three year checkup with Dr. G — it has been a whole year since her last one! She was a little apprehensive when she heard the words “finger prick,” but was a super trooper in the lab. Turns out they did a “blood draw” from her arm instead, to test for lead, and shellfish allergy since I am allergic to shrimp. She merely said ouch and then became so fascinated with the procedure, she was too busy asking questions and observing to worry. She was disappointed with the plebian bandaid, as she was hoping for a Snoopy one, but got to pick out a red lollipop for being so brave, and all was well with the world. The little Miss weighs 32 pounds (65th percentile) and measures 38.5″ high (83rd percentile), with a one-year gain of almost 3 pounds and 4 inches. Getting very long and lean indeed.

I’m Fwee!

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Today I turned three years old! I marked the occasion with chocolate cupcakes for snack at school, cheese pizza for dinner at home, and a few presents before heading to bed. I was so excited, I didn’t even nap this afternoon! This weekend Dad is going to make me a “Koko” the gorilla cake and Mom said I’ll get to open the rest of my presents. Want to see how I’ve grown? Here I am at two, here I am at one, and here I am at birth.

Special Birthday Date

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

To prematurely celebrate Flora’s third birthday, Marty and I took Flora out for a special date, leaving Charley with the sitter. We spent the day at the Museum of Science in Cambridge, braving another winter storm, to see the Dinosaur Exhibit with a real Triceratops fossil and other dinosaur models and skeletons, play in the Discovery Center, walk up and down the musical stairs, and check out the New England habitat animal dioramas. Flora is studying dinosaurs this month at school — she told us that the T-Rex was a meat-eater and the Triceratops had three horns. After lunching in the cafe, Flora spent a good, long time selecting a present from the gift store — a light up koosh centipede she calls Wiggly.

What Da Ya Want For Nothing …

… a rrrrrrrubber biscuit? Well, maybe a teething biscuit. Charley so enjoys these, that taking them away when gummed to nothing causes quite an upset.

In Charley news, we have rolling over from back to front (December 16), shaking head no, no, no (December 27), clapping toys and hands together (December 31), and the emergence of the pincher grasp (January 2).

Help Me Obi-Wan Kenobi …

… you’re my only hope. Dad and I spent the holidays watching the Star Wars Trilogy, and I fashioned this “beautiful princess” outfit from my dress-up stash. “I’m Princess Leia.

Happy New Year 2009

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Charley was up for a midnight feeding to ring in the new year, but the rest of the family was fast asleep. Does anyone with kids make it until the ball drops anymore? In the morning, we dressed the kids festively (dots and stripes, oh my!) in some new Christmas clothes and posed them with their blabla guys to match. Then we built a “bear cave” with their big dotted and striped blocks. We wish everyone a happy and healthy new year!
