Rochester

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

We headed to Rochester on Sunday to visit family and friends for a week. We stayed with Aunt Chris and Uncle Jack in Webster, and of course the real Rusty, too. It rained the whole week, but there were brief periods of sun, which we took full advantage of by hanging outside, walking along the beach, and playing on the playground. My best friend Michelle and her family were also in town, and we all got together several times to play. The kids had a blast at the Strong Museum of Play, and the most fun “shopping” at Wegmans. The Dads had even more fun playing vintage arcade games in the Videotopia Exhibit.

Poughkeepsie

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

We started off our week-long, rain-soaked vacation in Poughkeepsie, New York, where we attended the wedding of a Colby friend, Robin, and her main man, Anders. I have to admit that I get no more pleasure than when I get to dress the kids in cute clothes. Unfortunately they were promptly soiled in the wet and muddy lawn. Thank God for Oxiclean. But the kids had fun socializing, eating out, and swimming in the hotel hot tub.

12 Month Checkup

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Fat Boy Slim had his 12 month checkup this morning with Dr. G. He must be burning up all those calories he’s scarfing down with his non-stop go, go, go, because he only gained 1 pound, 2 ounces (24 pounds) and grew 1.5″ (30.5″) over the past three months. That landed him in the 69th percentile for weight and the 74th percentile for height. But so as not to be outdone by the guys on Easter Island, his head grew 5/8″ (19″) — that’s the 95th percentile! True to form for a one year old, Charley’s temper has surfaced, and he expresses his frustration with a constant stream of screeching (see his mad face in slide show below). Apparently one is the pivotal age for pig-headedness. We’ve noticed Charley’s insatiable curiosity with cause and effect this week, as he’ll often turn a toy over to see how it works, or repeat an action (like rolling a ball under a piece of furniture) to test the results. And he started to make the “mmmmm” sound when playing with cars and boats. He loves to waive and point. With his handful of words, a few signs, feeding himself, and his physical prowess (he can push himself to standing right off the floor, balance for a long while, and take a few steps before falling), he met all his milestones and then some. And his reward? Two shots in each leg and a finger prick.

Father’s Day 2009

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

The only thing Marty wanted for Father’s Day was a homemade cherry pie. No ready-made crust or canned cherries here — I made this sucker from scratch. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads, Granddads, and Great Granddads out there!

Chi Li Turns One!

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

We celebrated Charley’s first birthday with a little Zhuazhou celebration, a traditional Mandarin costume (hat courtesy Linda and Oliver Low!), and some Asian-inspired fare. For the first grab, Charley crawled over to the cloth and gently grazed his fingers over several items before making his final, and only, selection — the orange. The orange is an important symbol of fortune in the Chinese culture, so we’re hoping the kid can bank-roll us in our old age. We’ll be taking more pictures of Charley in his costume and “birthday chair” soon — this one was promptly soiled with watermelon drippings and sidewalk chalk, hence the naked boy.

Tiger Cake

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Flora thought Charley would like a cake in the shape of a tiger for his first birthday. She helped Marty “clean up” after he made the cake and frosting, and before I decorated its face. Turns out Charley really DOES like tiger cake for his birthday!

Blue Cupcake and First Steps

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

For a pre-birthday birthday celebration, Charley’s sitter Diane brought over balloons (a favorite) and blue cupcakes with sprinkles. Charley got his first taste of chocolate in the process — I think he’s a fan. Truth be told, I can’t name but one food (beef) that he isn’t fond of. He sure does like to eat. In other notable news, Charley has taken his first steps this week! He doesn’t get farther than one step before falling, but I suspect he’ll be taking off in no time.

Adventures in Self-feeding

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Not to be outdone by his sister’s particularities, Charley has a few of his own. One of which is his insistence of having finger foods placed in front of him at all mealtimes in order to accept anything fed to him on a spoon, or he MUST hold a spoon of his own. He’s definitely letting us know he is independent enough to feed himself, but clearly not proficient at it yet! In other Charley news, he has pushed up from the floor to a hands-free standing position, learned how to blow kisses, LOVES to throw back a sippy cup, and is all about waiving hi and bye.

Playground

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The kids and I almost always hit up a playground on summer Mondays and Fridays, even if it just walking to the one a few blocks away. They get to expend some energy, and even I get a work out pushing the two of them in the double stroller back up “the hill.”
