Double Trouble (15 Month Checkup)

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Charley had his 15 month checkup on Wednesday, and while waiting for Dr. G in the exam room, had fun admiring his physique in the mirror. Over the past three months, he has packed on a slight 1 pound 4 ounces (weighing in at 25 pounds, 4 ounces or 62nd percentile), grown one little inch (measuring 31.5″ or 63rd percentile), but thank God has kept his head circumference at 19 inches (80th percentile). He met all his milestones and endured three shots, stopping mid-cry the second I picked him up from the exam table. What a faker!

Old Friends

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Adam was Flora’s buddy way back when she was in the toddler room at school, but he and his little sister, Olivia, transferred to the other YMCA location. His mother and I have been trying to get the two together for about a year. That’s right, a year. We finally had success and met up at the Commons, and Flora and Adam wasted no time rekindling their friendship. Charley didn’t mind playing with Olivia either!

15 Months Old

Monday, September 28th, 2009

On the 20th Charley turned 15 months old, although he has no concept of the fact that he is just 15 months, and will keep pace with all the big kids. His new favorite word is “uh-oh,” and he’ll purposely drop food on the floor — all the while looking you dead in the eye and smiling — and proclaim “uh-oh!” Slight of hand he has not. He also waives and says “hi” to anyone and everyone, over and over and over — it’s how he gets your attention. He loves to dance, and as soon as he hears the beat he crouches down, throws one arm way behind his back, and bounces up and down. He’s really got some rhythm for a white boy. He’s all about learning to talk these days, and started using sign language to communicate bath, drink, stinky, and please. We had given up on the signs long ago, but apparently Charley was absorbing them like a little sponge to be used at a later date. While he is building his vocabulary (he has about 15 words now: mama, dada, hi, uh-oh, dog (he makes the barking sound for dog), hot, bye, guck (truck), nana (eat), eye, ball, cat, cah-cah, more-more, etc.) he understands everything you say to him — even two-step instructions. He LOVES anything that goes, like trucks, trains, and balls. Still loves to play with hair and is turning into a binky lover. And he’s got a wicked sweet tooth!

Fourth Birthday Parties

Monday, September 28th, 2009

All of Flora’s pals are turning FOUR this year, and last weekend we had THREE birthday parties to attend. The first was Lila’s Kidzfun party where exercise = fun! The second was Mackenzie’s princess party complete with a castle bounce house. And the third was Tristan’s party in the park with a really cool playground. Three solid days of cake and juice boxes!

Sepia

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Today was a sad day for our family as we said goodbye to Sepia. I adopted her from Lollipop Farm in Perinton, New York, in March of 1995 when I was just twenty-four and she was just six months — she almost made it to her fifteenth birthday on October 8th. My first sighting of her was her tail sticking out from a litter box. Her name was Fluff, and she had lived in the country with a truck-driving family and a dog — clearly not to her liking! Little did I know she would become a fat, long-haired cat, the likes of which I never wanted, and immediately changing my mind about fat, long-haired cats. She has lived in many apartments in New York, Florida, and Massachusetts (plus one house) … traveled long distances by both car and plane … survived knee surgery AND two kids. She has saved me from many invaders including bugs, mice, and bats. She kept me company when I felt lonely, and even when I didn’t. She loved to lick plastic bags and eat plants … chew magazines and attack toilet paper. She inspired Flora’s first word, “cah,” and Charley’s second, “kit.” She’s been called The Girl, Pizza (from when Flora couldn’t pronounce Sepia), Meepers, Moopers, Boots, LaSepia Johnson, and all variations thereof. But she was best known as the glamorous kitty with a movie-star attitude who turned her nose up at most visitors and saved all her loving for a few special people.

Victorian Fair

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

This weekend was the Victorian Fair in town, so we headed down first thing to stroll along Main Street. Our first stop was inside an ambulance, where we got to see how emergency equipment is used and some really, really big band aids. Next was stocking up on freebees from various booths — popcorn, tootsie rolls, pencils, bubbles, and balloons — and scouting out all the things Flora tried to negotiate buying on the way back to the car. We ended the day with a pizza lunch and ice cream truck ice cream. I bought Charley a really cute Fenway tee by Jeff Caturano from The Arc of East Middlesex booth — all of their items are crafted by artists with disabilities — there is something simply insightful in their work. Check out some of their art here.

Not a Box

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

My friend Hilary sent a bunch of hand-me-downs for Charley (thank you!), but I couldn’t get the clothes out of the box fast enough. First it became a boat, and then a doll crib, and then a bear cave, and then a dog house.

Spoon Feeding

You might not guess from the photos, but Charley is getting pretty good at feeding himself with utensils.

Amy’s 39th Birthday

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Marty made a delicious gold cake with chocolate frosting from scratch for my 39th birthday — the kids really liked the frosting! And now it’s just one more year before I start the slow decent towards death. Sigh.

Charlie Chaplin

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

My Mom said Charley Hergert walks like Charlie Chaplin, and she’s SO right. Must be in the name.

Picnic Lunch

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Marty worked from home today, so we had a picnic lunch together at Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield. The kids had fun on the playground and eating al fresco, but had the most fun feeding and chasing the ducks.

Killing Me Softly

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Flora loves “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees, except when SHE sings it, she says, “Killing me softly with his NICE WORDS, strumming my FACE with his fingers, telling my whole life with his SONG…” It’s hilarious.
