Halloween Night

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Halloween night was windy and warm — a perfect night for trick-or-treating. I’m not sure if it was the unseasonably warm weather or that it was a weekend, but we have never seen so many trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood! We went around the block with our neighbors, Kevin, Ronda and Victoria — and of course Gram K — and got a work out to boot tramping up all the hills and steep steps to the big Victorians while carrying one or the other kid and accompanying basket. The kids managed to score a HUGE pumpkin full of sugar, most of which I am hoping Marty will bring to work.

Best Halloween Treat Ever

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

We’ve all really been missing Sepia, and I’ve been casually searching petfinder.com to see if there were any little kittens in our area up for adoption. The minute I laid eyes on Jordan I melted. Marty agreed. I immediately filled out the adoption application online through the Billerica Cat Care Coalition, and was approved. Approved, you may ask? Yes, approved — they check references and your vet record — seriously. The kitten’s mother, Angel, a Calico cat with medium long hair, and the litter were living in Lowell where the Mom was being abused by neighborhood kids and the kittens were living in an abandoned apartment building hallway. The kittens were born in the first week of September, so they are just about eight weeks old.

This morning we went to Petco in Burlington for a meet-and-greet with Jordan and her siblings (the kitten’s first outing). I mean, would it have even been humanly possible to say no once we saw these little loves in person? I don’t think so. So, Jordan (kitten standing in bottom picture) and Donnie (first kitten in top picture) are ours, and we pick them up next weekend! Jordan is the only gray colored cat of the litter of five and has yellow/gray eyes (the other four are orange and white) and Donnie is the only boy and mostly orange with blue eyes. The kittens appear to be a Tabby/Tortie mix with long hair and big round eyes. They love to eat, play, and get into mischief. We’ll be giving them new names after they come home.

The other siblings are Joey (white and buff), and twins Dani and Joanie (both orange and white). I wish we could have brought the whole lot home, but I think two frisky kittens will be more than enough!

Little Red and The Tramp

Friday, October 30th, 2009

This afternoon was Melrose’s annual downtown trick or treat, so the kids will get to celebrate Halloween two days in a row — and with their Gram K who is visiting from KC! It took us nearly an hour and a half to walk two blocks — everyone had to stop to ogle Charlie Chaplin and even take his picture. He’s donning a mini suit and vintage bowler hat. And Little Red got her own ooh and ahs. She’s wearing a traditional vintage dirndl dress from Germany and a hand-made cape. We’re all exhausted and sugared up!

Melrose Place

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Apparently now Tom Cruise’s and Cameron Diaz’s latest movie, “Knight and Day,” will be filming a scene in Melrose this Friday along the Fellsway. Last week Ben Affleck was filming “The Town” in an old bank along Main Street. What gives?

Daddy’s 39th Birthday

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

What better way to start a dad’s birthday than a trip to Lowe’s where my Daddy got to pick out a new rake and some paint buckets. Then just he and I went to a huge Halloween parade in Woburn while Charley stayed home with Mommy to nap, but Dad forgot the camera on the window sill so we didn’t get any pictures. Trust me, it was cool, and there was candy. When we got home Mom made lasagna for dinner and brownie sundaes for dessert. And then we carved our jack-o-lanterns before collapsing for the evening. Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Jack-O-Lantern Designs

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Flora’s pumpkin-face design.

Flora’s spider design.

We carved our pumpkins this evening and Flora drew these designs as possible carvings for hers. Stay tuned for jack-o-lantern pics to see which one we ended up carving.

16 Months Old

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Sixteen months old and no concept that he is only 16 months old. In Charley’s attempts to keep up with big sister, he has badly scraped his chin and chipped his front tooth in the past week (on two separate occasions!). He imitates every single thing Flora does, and wants all the things she gets. His temper flares when you try to help him eat, brush his teeth, etc. — he wants to do everything by himself. He’s added some new words to his regular repertoire: baby, car, boon (ballon), mine, butt, bubble, guys, clock, sock, and oh. He loves animals, books, trucks/cars/trains, being silly, and most of all music and dancing. And he has given up nursies and sleeps through the night, mostly, and finally.

Fall Snow

Yup, that’s snow, our first snow of the season.

First Sleepover!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I had my first sleepover at my house with my pal, Ruby, from school. We snuggled up in sleeping bags to watch Snow White and munch on popcorn, and then we played, talked, giggled, and bickered in bed until 9PM when Mom finally put us in different rooms and we promptly fell fast asleep.

Stuck On You

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I started a sticker chart for Flora a couple weeks ago so she could earn stickers for doing good jobs during her most difficult times: getting dressed and ready, drop-off at school, playing well with friends and Charley, and going to bed. We call it her Big Girl Chart, but sometimes she calls it her “Job Chart.” At the end of the week, we count up all her stickers. She loves to chose from her many stickers and place them on the chart (hung right in the kitchen for maximum visibility), but more importantly, she has been SO much more cooperative and SO much less defiant since we started! I found some extra special googley eye Halloween stickers at Target, and she loves to earn one of those for her hardest transition … getting dressed (clothes must be all cotton (no jeans), no buttons anywhere, no ruffles, yet can’t be plain, preferably a dress, and of course must be pink. Recently she added “no cats.” Brother.) I, myself, am a seasoned sticker lover, and at the height of the sticker craze, I was in 6th grade with quite a collection. At recess, my classmates and I would trade, although I remember never wanting to let go of many of my stickers. My most coveted — the puffy Captain Caveman sticker (bottom right). Yes, I still have my sticker collection, and my Captain Caveman — one of the few things I saved from years past. I’m going to scan in others to share — they are just too good not to!

Honk!

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

This morning we met friends Gina, David, Dobbin, and Kate for brunch at Full Moon Restaurant in Cambridge. It’s super kid-friendly with buckets of toys at the tables, drawing paper table cloths and crayons, and a play area with train table, kitchenette, books, and tons of toys. While waiting for our food, we ran into Jennifer and Violet of the Affleck-Garner family, and Flora played trains with Violet while I chatted up Jennifer (Ben sat at the table with baby Serafina.) Seriously. After eating, we played at the newly remodeled Cambridge Commons playground and waited for the Honk Festival parade to come by. The kids loved looking at all the costumes and dancing to the funky music.

Gettin’ Our Fall On

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This morning we met Hanna and Seneca at Smolak Farms in North Andover for donut eating, cider drinking, apple picking, pumpkin buying, and all around gettin’ our fall on — in that very order! This farm has a playground, animals, and a farm store with all kinds of baked goods and ice cream — but this weekend they also had bounce houses, hayrides, activities, and a food court. We picked Empire and Paula Red apples (Marty is making a crisp as I write), explored the pumpkin patch, and bought orange, orange and green marbled, and white pumpkins to carve later.

Boo!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

We made Halloween masks from paper plates, paint, construction paper, add-ons, twine, and glue this afternoon — Flora made a scarecrow and Charley made a jack-o-lantern. Boo!

Smooky

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Flora wanted to do the front porch up real “smooky” this year, so Marty made a life-size scarecrow, strung spider webbing, and placed a big, black spider above the door. Upon completion, she decided to name the scarecrow Farmer Brown. Even though I know he’s there, EVERY time I get the mail I think he’s a real person, and jump a mile!

Breakfast of Champions

Did you know that they make straws out of Oreo cookies? Flora and Charley certainly do.

Donuts With A Difference

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Two satisfied customers, not to mention Mom and Dad. And to top off our breakfast of donuts in Medford, we had pizza at Santarpio’s in East Boston for dinner. Yum and yum!
