Vintage Clothes

Gray dot dress, orange blouse Red/white/black suspender dress

Blue/red/white sailor jacket Blue double button jacket, red/white/blue stripe trim

Multi floral jumper, lacy jacket Blue/pink/white embroidered lacy dress

Yellow velour v-neck tee Red/white/blue embroidered carousel top

I finally started to take pictures of the vintage (late 50s and 60s from what I can guess) clothing lot I purchased from e-bay in October. There are over 100 pieces, so hold tight as I expect it will take me quite a while to get through them all. They all arrived in unworn condition with their original manufacturer and price tags. Out of the 100+, about 10 have some staining and tearing that I have been trying to fix. I plan to keep my favorites and re-sell/re-gift the rest. Here are a few …

Vintage-Inspired

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

I’m totally addicted to the vintage-inspired fashion and housewares that have been hitting the mainstream. If you’re a fan of the retro, be sure to check out Anthropologie— they sell both clothes and housewares and I just want to move right into their catalogue. In the market for the cutest kid’s clothes? Check out Mini Boden. Both stores are really affordable when on sale, and sometimes even when not. Urban Outfitters just launched a new line of 1940s inspired wear. And I’ve even seen throwback styles at Old Navy, Gap, Gymboree, and Crazy 8.

Pictured: “Both Sides Blouse” from Anthropologie’s 50s Proper Collection; “Scallop Trim Coat” from Boden; and the already-got-it-for-Flora “Flower Shift Dress” from Crazy 8. Not that she needed another dress, let alone a vintage one.

Bones

“Bones” (Charley’s Jersey Shore nickname) at the doctor’s office, though we might have to change it to “Boogie” with that constant running nose!

Four Year Checkup

Monday, January 25th, 2010

“F-Pow” (her Jersey Shore nickname) had her four year checkup today with Dr. G. After showing off her painted toenails, she happily cooperated with all of the doctor’s examining. She got her vision and hearing tested (we have to go back in a month to recheck her hearing because she had a hard time with the lowest setting), her finger pricked, and THREE booster shots. You would have thought the nurse was sawing off her leg with all her crying, but she soon recovered with the promise of a safety pop. Poor girl has to get the other two booster shots next month. Sigh. Little Miss F weighed in at 38 pounds (73%) and measured 41.5″ (84%), which means she has gained 6 pounds and grown 3″ in the past year! Aside from her hearing test, she passed the exam with flying colors. Both kids have been battling fluid and wax in their ears with all these winter colds (Charley has to go on ANOTHER course of antibiotics for his), so hopefully it’s just that.

Doll-Sized

Monday, January 25th, 2010

With so much kid- and doll-sized things around the house, the kittens have found the coziest places to snuggle. Greta likes a window view and is usually found on the climbing blocks or bookcase. You can almost always find Finn curled up in the doll stroller, doll carrier, or shopping cart. He even lets the kids push him around for a “walk!”

Poisonous Bears

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Next door neighbor, Victoria, came over for a play date on Sunday. We made a fort from kitchen chairs, twine, and the disco ball … and the girls pretended to be “poisonous bears” in a dark cave — scary!

19 Months Old

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Carlos turned 19 months old today and somehow he has changed so much in just the past couple of weeks. He has at least tripled his vocabulary and has started to “parrot” by repeating a random word from your sentence (not to self: ixnay on the swear words). And he’s using the ASL sign for more and please like mad, although he can say both words. He hasn’t faded out his secret language yet (“bah bah” is to draw or color, which might have come from “draw draw” or “paper;” “nah-nah” means to eat/food which we think came from “banana”). He, like his father and sister, remembers everything: where things are, people and places, things we did the last time we were with said person or at said place. He knows most of his body parts, including his “butt-butt (for some reason he doubles up on syllables — two syllable words are easier to say than one). He loves to climb, assemble and disassemble, dance, and do everything just like his big sister. He’s a bit of a clown and likes to make people laugh. But the best part about Charley is that he is still a Mama’s boy, and loves to snuggle and play with my hair.

Four Years in Chairs

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

By the way, I rescued this chair from the basement of the Humboldt/Marion Streets property my father owned — it was filthy and rusty and shoved in a corner!

The Retro Housewife

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

We gave Flora a retro play kitchen for her big birthday gift — which took two hours and four adults to put together — but decidedly well worth the effort. Our vintage play dishes are right at home now, and little Miss Housewife can serve us up some mean cupcakes.

The Chair Session

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

After much bribing, Flora agreed to wear one of her vintage dresses and take her birthday chair photos. I bought a “lot” of one hundred plus — yah, that’s right, one hundred plus — vintage dresses from the late 1950s and early 1960s, in sizes 2-18, mostly mint condition and with original tags, from e-bay shortly after Halloween for only $200. I had been begging Flora to wear one for months, and she finally agreed. I can now say I got my money’s worth!

The Ariel Cake

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

We had a little girly dance party to officially celebrate Flora’s fourth birthday this weekend. Thank goodness her Aunt Tracy and Uncle Chuck came up from New Jersey to help with the festivities — even little parties are a lot of work! We transformed the play room into a dance floor — complete with a disco ball, lights, foil fringe curtains, and hanging decorations. Some of the kids rocked 80′s-inspired outfits, and they all cut a rug dancing to Flora’s Mix Birthday Soundtrack — twenty-one of her favorite songs. We ended the evening with homemade pizzas, cake, ice cream and presents. Flora chose to have an Ariel cake, which proved a little challenging for her parents, but we think we pulled it off. Here it is in the making.

Don’t Be Fooled

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Don’t be fooled by this sweet face — about twenty seconds after taking the picture Flora said (after I told her she couldn’t open any more presents), “I am NOT talking to you … I am ANGRY and MAD and SPITTING on you. Don’t TALK to me.” Sigh.

F-O-U-R!

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Miss Flora turns four today — what a BIG girl! To celebrate, she brought purple cupcakes with pink frosting to school to share with her friends, and later we’re meeting BFF Ruby at the Border Cafe for dinner. She even got to open a couple of presents this morning — some bling from Gram Kaye and a paint and draw video “game” from Papa and Amma. We can hardly believe it has already been four years since we brought our little girl home — she’ll be off to college in no time. Sniff, sniff. Though she does say she’ll NEVER leave me, and of course her Daddy says she can live with us forever and ever!

“Those Big Blue Eyes”

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Last week Flora moved up to the Preschool Room from the Transitional Preschool Room at daycare. We were expecting no less than a few weeks of tears and problems, but Flora pushed forward and never looked back, and she even likes the homework! I’m not sure if it is because she thinks she is officially a big girl now, or if it is because she is mirroring the older kids, but ever since the transition Flora wants to do everything by herself and for herself with absolutely NO help: undress and dress, pack her lunch, put on her coat and shoes, carry her belongings, etc. The other morning she protested, “You know, Mom, I’m a big girl now and I can do things for MYSELF!” Today she made this drawing of Charley “with those big blue eyes.” It’s the first time she’s drawn a person with life-like arms instead of single lines!

Boxed Up

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

After unpacking our package of Penzey’s spices yesterday in the mail, we pretended to box Flora up and ship her off to her grandparents.

Aww, Mom, do we HAVE to take our picture together?

Homemade Playdoh

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

After drawing and coloring and painting and gluing, we were running out of snowy-day art project ideas. So we decided to make our own playdoh: (1 cup flour + 1/2 cup salt + 1/2 cup water + food coloring) which was surprisingly easy and just slightly messy!

New Year’s With The Gibsons

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Long gone are the days of dressing up and painting the town red for New Years. Instead, we rung in 2010 (well, almost) with fondue and friends. Ruby, Flora and Charley had a great time dipping bread and apples into the gooey cheese, toasting and cheersing with sparkling cider, and ending the night eating Christine’s first attempt at a made-from-scratch cake (the verdict? damn tasty!).
