Flora’s Ornaments

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Consider yourself lucky if you got one of these Flora-made ornaments for Christmas. She drew all the designs on with pencil first with the recipient in mind, carefully chose her colors to paint, and added glitter glue and glitter to finish the look.

Decordova

Friday, November 25th, 2011

To work off some of our Thanksgiving girth, and take advantage of the 60 degree weather, we took a stroll through the outdoor Decordova Sculpture Park Thanksgiving weekend.

Cubby

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

We had to put some of our records away because the cats were using them as a scratching post. I was fretting about what we could put in their place, but Charley found a good use for the empty cubby!

“BUG!”

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

“Buh Buh, Uh Uh, Guh Guh … Bah-Ugh … Buhg … BUG!” Flora has started to read! After working on identifying all the big and little letters and their sounds, she is now working on sounding out words in books … and on signs … and everywhere! The rhyming Dr. Suess books like Hop on Pop and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish are great beginner books because of the repetition of common sounds (like “op” and “ad”), so we are reading those every night. Flora can also write all of her big letters, most of her little letters, and lots of numbers.

And Charley has been whipping out all kinds of words these days! He is speaking in short sentences and repeats everything. He’s even been identifying colors, some letters, and all kinds of objects. But I love that he still has “Charley words” for some things, like “guy-guy” for hair pomade.

I’m in no hurry for either of them to grow up too soon!

Northshore Life Magazine

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Shortly after Charley was born, we took the kids to Salem Willows Park in Salem, MA. I took our now-lost Canon Digital Elph to take pics, but after just a short while the battery died. Recently someone from Northshore Life Magazine contacted us via flickr to use one of the photos I took of the vintage carousel for their Summer 2010 article on Salem … and here it is!

Amy, or “YAM,” by Flora

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Flora loves to depict me how she wishes I actually were: long dresses, red lipstick, lots of accessories — instead of how I usually am: sweatpants, no makeup, and accessory-less!

Dying Easter Eggs

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

This year we added vegetable oil to some of the dyes to get a marbled effect, twisted rubber bands around some of the eggs to get a tie-dye effect, and put round stickers on some of the other eggs to get polka-dots.

Aquarium

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Inspired by the big aquarium at the Chinese restaurant we went to last night, Flora drew this picture this morning.

Splatser

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Flora got her very first “video game” for her fourth birthday, Splatser, and we finally figured out how to save her art to a USB drive. The game is really an electronic draw and paint platform for the tv, where the user can choose stampers, brushes, colors and more to create original artwork. Since she got the hang of the eye-hand coordination thing, she’s been pretty creative with her makings. Here’s one of them — a “birthday party for Ames” (she’s been calling me Amy and Ames as of late).
