I call this “the part where the alien comes out of that guy’s stomach.”

Dying Easter Eggs

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

This year we added vegetable oil to some of the dyes to get a marbled effect, twisted rubber bands around some of the eggs to get a tie-dye effect, and put round stickers on some of the other eggs to get polka-dots.

Aquarium

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Inspired by the big aquarium at the Chinese restaurant we went to last night, Flora drew this picture this morning.

Splatser

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Flora got her very first “video game” for her fourth birthday, Splatser, and we finally figured out how to save her art to a USB drive. The game is really an electronic draw and paint platform for the tv, where the user can choose stampers, brushes, colors and more to create original artwork. Since she got the hang of the eye-hand coordination thing, she’s been pretty creative with her makings. Here’s one of them — a “birthday party for Ames” (she’s been calling me Amy and Ames as of late).

I Owe It All To You, Ed Emberly

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I dug out one of my most beloved childhood books from the attic, Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Animals. I’m pretty sure I “borrowed” it from my friend, Theresa Seeley, as it still has her sister’s name, Kris, on the inside front cover. Yah, you probably shouldn’t “lend” me anything if you actually want it back. Anyway, I totally credit this book for teaching me how to draw, by simplifying objects down to their individual shapes, and showing you step-by-step how to layer the shapes to make the object. Flora made the lion and spider above after just one try — her very first time using the book. Then later in the weekend, she made up the fish below all on her own. It’s amazing how since she turned four, or moved up to preschool, or whatever the genesis, that she can all of sudden write all her letters and draw identifiable objects. She’s definitely expressing an interest in learning how to read for herself, and is working on letter sounds and spelling.

Won’t You Be Mine?

This is Flora’s valentine to all our friends and family — she stamped, glued, and cut until she felt it was perfect … then asked me to “put it on the computer.” Happy Valentine’s Day!

“Those Big Blue Eyes”

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Last week Flora moved up to the Preschool Room from the Transitional Preschool Room at daycare. We were expecting no less than a few weeks of tears and problems, but Flora pushed forward and never looked back, and she even likes the homework! I’m not sure if it is because she thinks she is officially a big girl now, or if it is because she is mirroring the older kids, but ever since the transition Flora wants to do everything by herself and for herself with absolutely NO help: undress and dress, pack her lunch, put on her coat and shoes, carry her belongings, etc. The other morning she protested, “You know, Mom, I’m a big girl now and I can do things for MYSELF!” Today she made this drawing of Charley “with those big blue eyes.” It’s the first time she’s drawn a person with life-like arms instead of single lines!

Homemade Playdoh

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

After drawing and coloring and painting and gluing, we were running out of snowy-day art project ideas. So we decided to make our own playdoh: (1 cup flour + 1/2 cup salt + 1/2 cup water + food coloring) which was surprisingly easy and just slightly messy!

Jack-O-Lantern Designs

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Flora’s pumpkin-face design.

Flora’s spider design.

We carved our pumpkins this evening and Flora drew these designs as possible carvings for hers. Stay tuned for jack-o-lantern pics to see which one we ended up carving.

Boo!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

We made Halloween masks from paper plates, paint, construction paper, add-ons, twine, and glue this afternoon — Flora made a scarecrow and Charley made a jack-o-lantern. Boo!

Flora’s Skeleton and Ghost

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I seem to remember from art school that the first object kids universally create is a circle with lines radiating from it, and it symbolizes either a sun or a person. I found this drawing developmental timeline online.

Flora’s Scribblings

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Flora learned to recite the letters in her name and has started to show a real interest in letters, letter sounds, spelling, and rhyming. This morning she just started writing different letters all on her own, mostly from her name, and squealing, “I made an F! … I made an O! … I made an X! …”

And she’s been drawing more scenes with recognizable people (in the upper right hand corner: the circle is the body, the lines are the arms and legs, and the two small circles are the eyes) and objects. I asked her what all the other markings were, and she said: “the person is me, [the little lines underneath] are birds, everything else is snow, and the guy in the [bottom left] corner is a ghost.”

Easter Eggs

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Easter weekend has officially begun with the dying of eggs this morning. Flora dyed a dozen, and could have dyed a dozen more, but who could possibly eat so many hard-boiled eggs? So we painted some pictures with the leftover dye instead.

Reading Rainbow

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Flora made a “rainbow” on the dishwasher by grouping her magnetic numbers and letters by color. I suspect she’s going to be artistic and literary!

Robot Goggles 1

Rainy days call for art projects, and Mom had to come up with something to make from egg cartons other than caterpillars.

Flora and Amy Heart Sculptures 1

Playing Around Tree

Gram Kaye and Charley 1

We celebrated Labor Day with a trip to the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park with Flora and Charley’s Gram Kaye who is visiting for the week. The grounds are great for running around and checking out the big sculptures. Flora had fun pointing out all the embedded objects in the two big hearts, examining the rock face for all its necessary features, counting every “ball” in the sphere sculpture, and hiding in the stone fort sculptures while Charley enjoyed the stroller ride and fresh air.

Flora Drinks Jarritos

We’re trying our best to keep Flora’s and the family routine in tact despite the ups and downs of a newborn, so we went to dinner last night at Three Amigos after we picked Flora up at school. She loved the Jarritos “special drink,” and told the waiter, “I liked the chicken … I want some more.” Charley just slept in his car seat. Here is Flora’s photo of the table, and we’ve added a link to the right-hand sidebar called Photos By Flora to showcase her new talent. We’ll be adding to it as she experiments, so keep checking periodically.

By the way, I don’t think Flora is going to be much smaller than Charley — when figuring out her estimated height based on her two-year-old measurements, it looks like she’ll be 5 foot 9 inches tall! Now we just have to wait another 16 or so years to see if that comes to fruition.

Art Project

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Spreading Glue After three nights of “sleepovers,” I brought Flora back to Melrose. We visited the hospital on Sunday around 3:30 pm but not before Flora put on her dragon rain boots, donned a Mardi Gras bead necklace, and insisted on pushing her play stroller with Rusty the dog. She wanted to make a grand entrance.

Flora got to walk with her mother down the ward’s corridor and show off her boots to all of the nurses. She snacked on gelatin, ice cream, and juice from the snack area and got to see a few babies through the nursery window. Leaving mom behind though brought on a massive meltdown in which she chanted “Mom-mee” all the way down the hall, into the elevator, to the car, and all the way home.

Flora and I spent the entire day together today while Amy was with Charley at the hospital. (They come home tomorrow morning.) I declared it a “whatever-Flora-wants-Monday” as a treat to help her transition to the new family dynamics. So there were plenty of popsicles, she got to stay in her jammies all day, watch multiple “Super Why!” episodes, read Curious George books in bed, color with markers, paint with watercolors, and — her favorite — do “art projects.” Flora discovered how to squirt glue, so she coated the paper and pressed down stuff to her heart’s content. Oh, and she got to sit on the potty while watching TV. What more could a kid want?

Ansel Adams is 29 Months Old

Ansel Adams 4

Flora has discovered how fun it is to snap her own photos. Her favorite subject? Her toes. We’ve been letting her experiment with our old digital Canon Elph, but unfortunately it conks out after just a handful of shots. Here are a few of her masterpieces.

Special Notes

Special Notes

Apparently Flora inherited the I-Love-Post-It-Notes gene from me, courtesy of my father, who wrote damn near everything on a Post-It note or to-do-list. Flora calls her scribblings her “special notes” and then tells us what they say. From top, clockwise: Mommy, Beans, Mabel, Daddy, Applesauce, Flora Hergert, and I Love You.
