Six Year Checkup

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Packing a punch and topping her all-time stats at 48.25″ tall (92nd percentile) and 49 pounds heavy (71st percentile), it took two nurses plus me just to hold Flora down to get her flu shot. Let’s just say she was not a big fan of that part of her checkup :)

Pump It up!

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Flora’s final birthday celebration was a “Pumpjama” party at Pump It Up. The kids wore cute jammies and crazy hairstyles and cooky socks, jumped and bounced ’til their hearts content, and chowed down on pizza and owl-shaped birthday cake.

Flora’s Birthday Agenda

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Saturday morning Flora went for out for donuts with Daddy for breakfast, Saturday afternoon we all went to Peacuddy’s for lunch (now closed, sniff sniff), and Saturday evening we all went to Rang Indian Bistro (her pick) for dinner followed by a Peacuddy cupcake for dessert back at home.

Flora’s Sixth Birthday!

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

The birthday girl in her birthday chair — my how she has grown! At 6, Flora’s reading and writing have taken off since the start of kindergarten — she loves to read to us at bedtime to show off her skills and works hard to sound out new words. Flora is still an avid fan of art and all art and craft projects. She loves to draw the most and add details to her pictures to make them more interesting. Definitely a girlie girl, she’s a sucker for anything cute (like kittens) and anything prissy (like dresses). She’s very tall at nearly 50 inches, and packs a punch at nearly 50 pounds. She enjoys her days at kindergarten with her friends and has settled into her new routine. She loves her family, near and far, and sometimes you can catch her being very sweet to her little brother, but you have to be quick. Her favorite “people” in the house are Finn (the cat) and Rusty (her stuffed dog) — usually where there is one there is the other. Flora has grown into a creative, imaginative, and funny kid who still loves to snuggle.

Three Year Checkup

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

A quick visit with Dr. G. determined that Charley Boy weighs 32 pounds even (52nd percentile) and stands 36.8 inches tall (28th percentile). This was his first “big boy” visit and he got to use the BIG scale. Charley was very busy during the exam — touching everything, climbing up and down, and asking lots of questions (including “When can I have a WHOLE vitamin?”) — but Dr. G. gave him the thumbs up for meeting all of his physical and mental milestones. When she asked him if he was working on going on the potty, he replied, “I’m not 6 yet!” Oh brother. He was a super trooper when he got two shots (one in each leg) and a blood draw from his arm — promise of a blue lollipop lessened the blow. We noticed this week Charley’s sense of smell has fully developed, as he is constantly asking, “What stinks?” He’s really jumped up from borderline baby to full-on big boy this past month — he talks non-stop and gives a running commentary on everything going on with a tremendous vocabulary (but he still has his own cute way of saying a few words: “fezz-ert” (dessert), “Skriss-mas” (Christmas), “shoo-zick” (music), and “scun-screen” (sunscreen)). He’s very creative in his play and skilled at figuring out how things work, he’s good with numbers and math, he’s starting to point to words and ask, “What does this one say?,” and he likes to dress himself and choose his own clothes. His report card says, “Charley is preschool ready!” He loves music, dancing, and art … reading and looking at books … super heros and spooky guys … building with legos … and playing with the vintage Fisher Price toys and Playmobile figures. Despite becoming a big boy, he’s still very sweet and easy-going!

Charley’s Third Birthday Party

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

We celebrated Charley’s third birthday with a “Superhero” party at The Klubhouse. He and his friends had a blast driving on the track, climbing the pirate ship and castle, and bouncing in the inflatables. Cake was enjoyed by all, and the kids went home with a very super goody bag!

Charley’s Third Birthday

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Charley’s third birthday started off with a play date with best girlfriend Elsie, followed by making cupcakes for his class, enjoying one after dinner, and opening presents from the grandparents.

Five Year Checkup

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

When your FIVE, modesty is all the rage, so this year Flora wore a paper gown at her annual check up. And she checked out just fine — 75th percentile for weight (44 pounds even) and 90th percentile for height (45 inches even); she met all her five-year milestones; and, she didn’t have to have any shots!

Pretty In Purple

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

It was inevitable that after attending TWO birthdays at Sugar Plum Parties Flora would want to have hers there. Being the kind of parents that give their kids every single thing they want yet wonder why they are so spoiled, we complied. She chose the Princess Tea theme, so the girls got to dress up, decorate a cookie, get a manicure and up-do, stuff an animal to take home, accessorize with jewelry and sunglasses, play a game of Disney Bingo, dance on stage with bubbles, and finish off with cake, “tea,” and sweets. All in two hours. The party was everything a little girl could ever want from a party (pink, purple, pretty, princess, and presents!) — I apologize in advance to the Moms whose daughters in attendance will be insisting on having their next birthdays at Sugar Plum (oh, and start saving!)

5th Birthday Chair Photos

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

If you’ve been a long-time follower of our blog, you know that every birthday we take the kids pictures in their “birthday” chair to see how much they have grown. For her shoot, Flora humored us most of the time, but made sure to throw in a silly face or a frumpy pose every now and again. Somewhere, somehow, during the past year, our baby girl became a “kid” — the only bit of “baby” left is in her chubby cheeks! She’s been working on her reading and writing and drawing (her favorite), is an adventurous eater, and loves to pretend play. Lately she’s been super silly and giggly and loud — loves to be the center of attention. And what we thought was a stage seems to really be a personality trait (generally defiant, opinionated, and stubborn) — and she is definitely in the “more-is-more” camp — we live in fear of her teenage years! But sometimes you can catch her being very sweet, even to her little brother.

Wheels

Friday, January 14th, 2011

The big girl gets a big girl ride for her birthday. Of course it is pink. And being that it is January in New England, she’s been practicing in the house!

Miss Five

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Flora chose Rang Indian Bistro for her birthday dinner where she happily chowed down on mixed Tandori grill, saag paneer, basmati rice, naan, and a mango lassi. Then we came back home for leftover unicorn cake.

Let the Festivities Begin!

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Since we’re having Flora’s princess tea birthday party at Sugar Plum Parties this year, we made her birthday cake a day early to celebrate with friends at school. She debated between a castle and a unicorn, finally settling on, well, you see.

Belated 29 Months Old

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

It occurs to me that I forgot Charley, the Christmas Pirate’s 29 month old post on November 20th — poor second child. Our little matey is growing up fast! He’s talking in sentences almost all of the time, he knows his colors, can count past 10, knows his ABCs, and has a word for just about everything. When he doesn’t, his favorite questions are, “What’s dis called?” and “Where’d dat come fwom?” The Star Wars obsession is already kicking in, and apparently the “shoot” gene carried over from the hunter-gatherer days. Ever since Halloween, he loves a good “scary guy.” His favorite things to do at school are chit chat with his gal pal Elsie, dance with his buddy Madison, sing songs, play outside, answer flash cards, and make art projects.

Marty’s 40th

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Of course no Marty birthday would be complete without a hot fudge brownie sundae. He ate two.

28 Months Old

Monday, September 20th, 2010

As you can see, Charley is slimming down, getting used to the idea of wearing underwear, and is all around an animated big boy. He talks in full sentences (although oft missing the little verbs), knows lots of letters, numbers, and all of his colors. He loves music and dancing, animals and “guys” (especially “pooky guys”), wearing hats and jackets, and running, climbing and playing with balls. Despite Flora’s constant bullying, she has become his favorite person, and sometimes you can catch them being really sweet to each other.

One Year Old!

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

The kittens (last October, below), no longer kittens (middle and top), turned one sometime in September — since they were rescued, we don’t know their exact birthdate. We can hardly believe how much they have grown, especially Finn! Flora calls Greta a “raisin” since she’s tiny, but Finn is a “meatball.” Actually, he’s more like an entire meat lasagna, as seen in the top pic!

29, again

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Thank you, family, for not actually putting “40″ on my birthday cake.

26 Months Old

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Charley seems to change so much from week to week. His personality is really forthcoming, and we predict a class clown in our future. Plus a big flirt, too! He’s talking in sentences and repeats everything, including the occasional swear. Recently he picked up two funny responses: “okay” and “alright.” Not devoid of some terrible two antics (throwing toys, hitting, and mixing food in his drink cup are his faves), he’s still a pretty sweet boy. And of course he is as active as ever!

4.5 and 25

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Years and months, that is. I have to say that I am NOT missing the first half of four. I think between all of Flora’s twos and threes, I had the hardest time during the first half of four. I’m not counting all my chicks, but Flora seems to have settled into being an independent, responsible, and mostly agreeable big girl. She loves to draw, read, tell stories, and pretend play. She really has an insatiable creative side! But no sooner did we get a reprieve with Flora then Charley hit his terrible twos, although his aren’t quite so terrible, at least in comparison. But he certainly has his own opinions and preferences, and has no problem expressing them. He’s talking in sentences — this morning he hollered across the breakfast table, “Don’t copy me Fwora!” He loves to do just about everything his big sister does (much to her chagrin), play anything outside, read, dance, and pretend play. He also loves to watch movies — his favorites are Monsters vs. Aliens (“Monsahs n Ailens”) and Wizard of Oz (“Viv Oz”). He definitely has a thing for monsters, robots, creatures, etc. and loves wearing shirts with “guys” on them.

Chair Photos

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Every year on their birthdays, we take pictures of the kids in the same chair so we can see how they’ve grown. Flora’s chair is the off-white molded plastic Eames-like chair we rescued from my father’s basement. Charley’s chair is a tan fabric Eames chair we bought at a now-gone antique store. This year Charley posed outside in his birthday suit and struck a sex-kitten pose!

Charley’s Two Year Check Up

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Right on schedule, Charley had his two year check up with Dr. G. After some initial reservations, he happily cooperated with all the poking, prodding, and pricking without shedding a tear. Of course, lollipops don’t hurt. He weighed in at 27 pounds 14 ounces (50%tile) and measured 34.75″ tall (61%tile). Here he is getting his head circumference remeasured. Turns out they mistakingly added a whole inch to the measurement last time. His noggin now measures 19.75″ (86%), making his head not quite so big. He’s not far off from Flora’s weight and height measurements at two — she was 29 pounds 4 ounces and 34.5″ tall. If the height prediction calculator is correct, Charley will be about 5′ 10″, and Flora will be 5′ 5″, which is uncanny, because those are the exact heights of Marty and me!
