We met up with friends Boulton and William at Drumlin Farm — a great place to walk around; learn about all kinds of animals (birds, sheep, goats, cows, horses, chickens, pigs, and more); explore flower and herb gardens, fields, and greenhouses; take a hay ride; and get a snack of hot cider and donuts! This trip we learned that a pigs pee is like a blasting garden hose and that the other pigs like to drink from it like a water fountain — that was one lesson we could have lived without!
The kids love to hit up a local playground with a friend or two — this time it was with pal Henry.
The kid’s first jack-o-lantern carvings of the season with pals Will and Jack. Boo!
Miss Mackenzie turned five and had a shipshape pirate party with games by KidzFun. The scallywags also dug for buried treasure in the sand box and took home swag from the treasure chest pinata. Check out the link below to see the amazing cake!
Truck Day on Burlington Commons. Big trucks, little trucks, old trucks, new trucks … every kind of trucks! And lots of horn honking. While we were exploring the Fire Trucks, a call came in, so we got to see the firemen and fire trucks in action.
Next girlfriend to turn five … Lila … with a Princess-themed dance party and face painting by Snow White!
The first of Flora’s girlfriends from the Family Network, Emma, turned five. She celebrated with an Ariel-themed birthday party complete with an aquatic-themed bounce house!
We spent a wonderful week with Chicago friends Julia, Ethan, Asa and Sid in Brewster on Cape Cod this summer. Despite several initial days of monsoon-like weather, we made up for it the last half of the week with daily trips to our private beach near Breakwater, kayaking on Flax Pond, a seal cruise around Monomoy Island in Chatham, walks to the General Store for toys and ice cream, exploring the tidal flats for sea creatures, biking around the neighborhood, and watching sunsets over Paine’s Creek Beach. That’s not to mention all of the eating, shopping, and all around playing we did the rest of the time. But both Flora and Charley loved the beach most of all.
Today was Flora and Charley’s last day at the Y, and to say goodbye to our friends, we brought in FIFTY cupcakes to share! Flora requested pink, and Charley requested chocolate. On the 7th they will be starting at a new school with smaller class sizes and an emerging curriculum where the kids’ and teachers’ interests and passions determine what they learn and explore, rather than sticking to predetermined lesson plans. We’re very excited!
New Englanders consume more ice cream per capita than in any other part of the country, and I’m pretty sure Flora and Charley are helping maintain that statistic.
We made a trek down to the Museum of Science with friends Jen and Drew. They all loved the Discovery Center best, where they could really get their hands on, and heads in, stuff and experiment with different materials.
It came to no surprise that Miss Fu had no qualms about glamming and hamming it up at Alice’s fifth birthday party. Afterwards the silliness continued at dinner with pal Ruby.
Usually I reserve our blog for stories about Flora and Charley. I don’t exactly know why — maybe because Lydia was my BFF when I was Flora’s age — but I wanted to write something about her here. Lydia (far right, I am in center, on her grandmother’s Duster) grew up a few houses away from mine, and we were totally inseparable. We looked so much alike (tall, chunky, brown eyes and long brown hair) that people used to ask if we were twins. Despite attending different schools, we continued our close friendship throughout our teenage years, and kept in touch in adulthood. I hadn’t talked to her since shortly after Flora was born, but I thought of her often, especially when telling Flora bedtime stories of our childhood adventures together. She was my oldest friend, always wore a silly smile, had endless energy, and adorable freckles. She was sweet and generous and loyal. Sadly, Lydia took her own life on July 8th, after losing the struggle with bipolar disorder and alcoholism. I hope she has found peace, and is feeling loved. Goodbye, until we meet again.
One last pool party and cookout to finish up the Fourth of July weekend with Flora’s BFF, Ruby.
The weather cooperated with Charley’s fiesta, and so we invited a few friends and neighbors over to play in the pool, dance to Putumayo, eat guacamole and grilled fajitas, drink sangria and Mexican beer, and all around chillax. It was a blast — Charley had the most fun splashing and belly-flopping in the pool. And we really do have the best friends and neighbors!
Fashionista friends Flora and Ruby modeled their new goga apron tops during a play date/movie night at the Gibsons. Christine and I bought these at this year’s Mommies Who Shop event … you might gather from the photos just how much I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them!
A couple of weekends ago we got together with friends from daycare for a cook out. Flora, Ruby, and Alice are all in the same class at daycare. And Charley and Elsie, Alice’s sister, are in the same class, too. The kids had a blast playing at the water table, chasing bubbles, and eating!

Ruby’s Sugar Plum Party was all about being a girl: pink and purple, bling, hairdos, makeup and manis, purses, flowers, dress-up, singing and dancing, sparkles, “tea” and sweet treats. This place is where a little girl dies and goes to heaven. Somehow in just two hours, the kids decorated sugar cookies, dressed like princesses, performed, got updos and manis, made lipgloss, stuffed animal purses, played bingo, accessorized, had a “tea” party, read a story, and ate snacks and birthday cake. Talk about gettin’ your girl on!
To celebrate Flora’s be-fri’s fourth birthday, we took Ruby out for a pedicure and lunch date. Once the girls decided between pink and purple (really, do we even need to consider any other colors?) nail polish they settled right into their chairs and enjoyed every last second. Flora chose pink with sparkles and a heart and a flower. Ruby chose purple with sparkles and two flowers. After drying, we headed over to Breads ‘N Bits for lunch and scones. The amount of girliness would only be surpassed later in the day, when Ruby had her birthday party at Sugar Plum Parties. See next post!
Because of the volcanic ash, our friends from London were stuck in the States for another week. But we didn’t mind, because we got another chance to visit with them. This time we played outside, ate dinner at Mexico Lindo, and went for ice cream at Soc’s. No one left disappointed!
