Spiderman

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Watched a 1967 episode of Spiderman with Charley this morning. I said it was the Spiderman I used to watch when I was little. Charley asked if he was a Spiderboy back then :)

Answer: Bra

The other day Charley saw me getting dressed in my room from his room. He shouts out across the hall to me, “Hey, what’s that boobs thing?”

“Butter My Lick It!”

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

We’ve been calling Charley Howard Cossel because he gives a running commentary all day long about what he sees, hears, thinks, and feels. He still gets his pronouns mixed up every now and again, like” “I” and “My,” and flip-flops parts of speech. Yesterday he kept asking for more butter on his pancakes and was using his toddler knife to scoop it up. But instead of saying “I want butter to lick” or “I want to lick butter,” he kept demanding, “Butter my lick it!” “Butter my lick it!”

B-O-R-I-N-G

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

In the midst of our third visit to H&R Block, Flora asks, “How do you spell boring?”

Bess Fwend

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

Last night…
Charley: “My bess fwend” (gives me a hug)
Me: “Best friend? Who’s your best friend?”
Charley: “You, Mommy!”
Me: (melting)

googolplex

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Flora: What’s 1+3?
Me: You tell me.
Flora: 3. What’s 9+9?
Me: 18.
Flora: What’s googolplex plus 1?
Me: I don’t know.
Flora: Don’t you know your numbers?
Me: googolplex isn’t a number!
Flora: Yes it is!
Me: What is it then?
Flora: It’s a 1 followed by TONS of zeros.
Me, thinking to myself: Damn, I think my four year old just schooled me.

“BUG!”

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

“Buh Buh, Uh Uh, Guh Guh … Bah-Ugh … Buhg … BUG!” Flora has started to read! After working on identifying all the big and little letters and their sounds, she is now working on sounding out words in books … and on signs … and everywhere! The rhyming Dr. Suess books like Hop on Pop and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish are great beginner books because of the repetition of common sounds (like “op” and “ad”), so we are reading those every night. Flora can also write all of her big letters, most of her little letters, and lots of numbers.

And Charley has been whipping out all kinds of words these days! He is speaking in short sentences and repeats everything. He’s even been identifying colors, some letters, and all kinds of objects. But I love that he still has “Charley words” for some things, like “guy-guy” for hair pomade.

I’m in no hurry for either of them to grow up too soon!

Tubes

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Buddy Boy got tubes in his ears this morning — here he is is post-op. After a little cat nap on the couch with some comfort food and Mousey, he bounced right back and was up and playing. We’ve noticed a decrease in runny noses, and an increase in talking, ever since the operation. In fact, he’s been stringing along several words to make sentences. My favorite sentence of his is “Mine did it” (when you ask him who made this big mess!?).

Yes in Spanish

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I took the bed rails off Flora’s bed, so now we can both easily snuggle under her comforter at story time. The other night after we nestled in, Flora asked me if I was comfy. I said, “Yes. Are you comfy?” (As she lay all snuggled up next to me). Flora replied, “No.” So I looked at her funny. And then she said, “I said no, but it means yes … in Spanish.”

All I Want for Christmas

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I think Disney has genetically engineered something in baby girls so that when they reach the age of three they become obsessed with princesses. Flora hasn’t even seen the movies, aside from Snow White, but even still she has asked Santa for: A big Ariel doll, a Belle doll with a carriage, and Princess Polly Pockets. She also asked for a cupcake maker, but when I told her it was for kids eight years old and up, she said, “I won’t play with it — I’ll just look at it ’til then.”

Facebook

Monday, November 16th, 2009

This morning I overheard Flora playing: “Hi, Ariel? Um, hi. I’m on Facebook. So I’ll see you soon. We’ll do a play date together. OK, bye.” We went to an Ariel-themed birthday party (Raessler’s Fourth) this weekend and Flora hasn’t stopped talking about — and, apparently to — Ariel ever since. The Disney Princess floodgates are slowly being pried open from my clinched fists! Sigh. Well, a little princess goes a long way. Hopefully a little.

“That Is A Cat”

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I swear Charley has been saving up words, and all of a sudden he can repeat just about any word you say. The other morning I said diaper, he repeated “di-pah.” I say “Flora,” he says “Wor-wah.” His list of words is endless. We were watching Nemo yesterday — he pointed to the screen and said wah-wah (water) and then buh-buh (bubble). He gets such a kick out of himself when he talks — giggles and puts his hand over his mouth. When we were picking up the kittens, Charley said what sounded exactly like, “That is a cat.” Seriously, he can talk in sentences now? I think he’s been holding out on us, preferring to point and grunt instead of speak. The jig is up, little man!

Blah Blah Blah

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Last night I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few things on the way to daycare, and apparently I entered an incorrect PIN number for my bank card and the transaction was denied. So I called our bank to get it straightened out, and the customer service rep was asking all kinds of specific questions abut deposits, withdrawals, etc. — none of which I knew the answers to since I don’t do our banking. He wouldn’t unblock the card, and I had to abandon the shopping cart there. I was furious. So in the car, Flora asked me if I was tired, and I told her that I was angry about the guy on the phone. She asked me to demonstrate his voice, which I did, and she said, “Oh, I know what you mean. Blah Blah Blah. Sometimes when you yell at me you go Blah Blah Blah.”

Her Own Worse Enemy

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Yesterday the kids and I were sitting on the couch. I heard a shriek coming from Charley, and looked over in their direction. Flora said, “What?” I said, “Nothing. What’s Up?” And she said, “Nothing. Why? Did you see me poke him?”

Last night I was reading Charley a bedtime story while Flora played in her room. She came running over to his door, “I’m not putting lip gloss on or anything in my room.” “Hmmm,” I said. “Then what’s all that purple stuff all over your chin?”

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Gram K never never seems to get in front of the camera during visits, but this time around she got behind the camera and took this picture of Charley in his Charlie Brown shirt. The kids had a great time playing outside and going to the park, making Tootsie Pop ghosts, and watching Tinkerbelle with their grandmother. And Charley learned how to say Gram K (“gray-kay”) and Flora (“aura”), to boot.

16 Months Old

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Sixteen months old and no concept that he is only 16 months old. In Charley’s attempts to keep up with big sister, he has badly scraped his chin and chipped his front tooth in the past week (on two separate occasions!). He imitates every single thing Flora does, and wants all the things she gets. His temper flares when you try to help him eat, brush his teeth, etc. — he wants to do everything by himself. He’s added some new words to his regular repertoire: baby, car, boon (ballon), mine, butt, bubble, guys, clock, sock, and oh. He loves animals, books, trucks/cars/trains, being silly, and most of all music and dancing. And he has given up nursies and sleeps through the night, mostly, and finally.

15 Months Old

Monday, September 28th, 2009

On the 20th Charley turned 15 months old, although he has no concept of the fact that he is just 15 months, and will keep pace with all the big kids. His new favorite word is “uh-oh,” and he’ll purposely drop food on the floor — all the while looking you dead in the eye and smiling — and proclaim “uh-oh!” Slight of hand he has not. He also waives and says “hi” to anyone and everyone, over and over and over — it’s how he gets your attention. He loves to dance, and as soon as he hears the beat he crouches down, throws one arm way behind his back, and bounces up and down. He’s really got some rhythm for a white boy. He’s all about learning to talk these days, and started using sign language to communicate bath, drink, stinky, and please. We had given up on the signs long ago, but apparently Charley was absorbing them like a little sponge to be used at a later date. While he is building his vocabulary (he has about 15 words now: mama, dada, hi, uh-oh, dog (he makes the barking sound for dog), hot, bye, guck (truck), nana (eat), eye, ball, cat, cah-cah, more-more, etc.) he understands everything you say to him — even two-step instructions. He LOVES anything that goes, like trucks, trains, and balls. Still loves to play with hair and is turning into a binky lover. And he’s got a wicked sweet tooth!

New Words

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

This morning, when Charley heard the garbage truck coming down the street, he got all excited and said, “guck, guck!” He also says “uh-o” for uh-oh and “eh-mo” for “elmo.” And he’s been making awfully silly faces and doing silly things (like putting pasta on his thumb) to get a laugh! He made up his own word for eat &mdash: a clicking of his tongue (to imitate the smacking of lips we do when we ask for a bite). It’s also the sound he makes when he sees the cat (to imitate the teh-teh-teh sound we make to call the cat). And all food is “na-na-na-na,” which we think came from banana.

First Words?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Charley has been babbling quite a bit, and really trying to communicate with sounds and signs (unfortunately, his sign for “more” and “all done” is the exact same flailing of his hands, so we just have to guess which he means). But this week he’s actually talked with meaning. At first I wasn’t sure when one day he crawled over to me and said, “mama.” But since then, he’s said “mama” a couple more times in a very deliberate way. And this morning, when we all walked down the stairs, Charley saw our cat, Sepia, and said “kit.” Flora and I both looked at each other in surprise. Of course her first word was “cah” for cat, so she was extra excited for Charley. I think I’m officially going on the baby books with “mama” being Charley’s first word. And with him being such a Mama’s boy, there’s no surprise there.

Flora’s Scribblings

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Flora learned to recite the letters in her name and has started to show a real interest in letters, letter sounds, spelling, and rhyming. This morning she just started writing different letters all on her own, mostly from her name, and squealing, “I made an F! … I made an O! … I made an X! …”

And she’s been drawing more scenes with recognizable people (in the upper right hand corner: the circle is the body, the lines are the arms and legs, and the two small circles are the eyes) and objects. I asked her what all the other markings were, and she said: “the person is me, [the little lines underneath] are birds, everything else is snow, and the guy in the [bottom left] corner is a ghost.”

From The Mouths of Babes

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Flora is playing with her dollies.
Me: “Flora, what’s your baby’s name?”
Flora: “Ed. Wait. Let me check the tag.”
Flora checks the tag.
Flora: “Made in Chinese. That’s her name. Chinese.”

Speaking of Chinese, Flora has been enjoying episodes of Ni Hao, Kai-lan on Nick, Jr., and has been talking to us in Chinese. We have no idea if she’s saying actual Chinese words, or if she’s making them up, but they sure sound authentic.

After making Charley dinner, then Flora’s, then Marty’s.
Marty: “What happened to ordering Chinese food?”
Me: “Apparently they are closed on Mondays. So Mommy doesn’t get to have her Chinese food. She just has to make everyone else’s dinner.”
Flora: “Mommy, you’re the best Mommy. All the other Mommies, they are not the best. You are the best Mommy.”

So, some days it IS worth it!

Name ‘Em Up and Hi Sign

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

In Flora’s world, everything and everyone has to have a name — people, stuffed animals, characters in a book, pieces of candy … and if they don’t already have a name, she’ll assign one. She coined her own turn of phrase for this: “name ‘em up.” I love this expression, because it reminds me of how her great grandparents from Missouri talked.

Charley has morphed waving Hi to his own sign for “I want that.” When he sees something he wants — toys on a shelf, balloons on the ceiling, light fixtures … he points to it with his chubby little arm and “waves Hi” at it. And he can answer the questions, “Where’s the balloon?” and “Where’s the light?” by “pointing” with his arm in the proper direction. His little hands and arms are rarely not moving. Even when he nurses, he reaches up to feel around my face like Helen Keller or plays with his own hair, and when you hold him facing you, he loves to play with your hair or ears.

Reading Rainbow

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Flora made a “rainbow” on the dishwasher by grouping her magnetic numbers and letters by color. I suspect she’s going to be artistic and literary!

Nine Month Checkup

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Charley had his nine month checkup with Dr. G. this morning. It was all fun and games until she came in to inspect his mouth (very swollen gums where his top teeth will soon be appearing), eyes, ears, nose, and body — The Boy really doesn’t like to be messed with — especially when all he really wanted to do was crinkle the paper, play peek-a-boo, and crawl off the edge of the exam table. To avoid injury (to both Charley and Dr. G!), the rest of the exam was spent in Mom’s lap. Large-And-In-Charge weighed in at 22 pounds 14 ounces (85th percentile, a gain of 2 pounds 4 ounces), measured 29″ high (77th percentile, a gain of 2.5″), and his head grew a mere 3/8″ (86th percentile), measuring 18 3/8″. At least he seems all very proportional, until you notice that his torso is twice as long as his legs! Dr. G. assessed that Charley is quite active, and will be the type of kid that climbs on top of the kitchen table. And she said when babies start to “stand” on their hands and feet like an upside down V (we’re there), they will soon be walking. I did catch him cruising a short distance the other day. Help!

We’re starting to teach Charley basic signs for every day activities like eat and drink, which he thinks are quite funny. His language skills are developing as he babbles non-stop, makes sounds to initiate conversation, and repeats back sounds you make. He has mastered sippy cups and straws, and has started finger foods. He really likes books, can play ball back and forth, but most of all enjoys exploring (i.e. getting into everything). And he’s mostly (and FINALLY) able to make it through the night without nursing. But the best news of all was that both he and I can start some dairy products into our diets, and see how Charley tolerates it. As SOON as we got back from the doctor’s office, I nearly wept as I savored veggie sausages with melted cheddar cheese. Yes, cheese tastes exactly as I remember it to, and it was damn tasty!

Squinty Eye and Square Jaw

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

With a series of seemingly uncoordinated moves (backwards crawling, butt scooching, rolling, and pushing himself up into a seated position (NEW!)), Charley manages to maneuver all around. Last night, he started in the middle of the living room, made his way over to the side chairs, shimmied to the entertainment center, and ended his journey wedged underneath this chair. I’m not officially calling it, but I think he’s been trying to say “Hi.” He pronounces it “Hah” and says it to get your attention or in response to you saying “Hi.” He has also been making sounds like a panting dog, putting toys on top of his head, and just being all around silly. I predict a class clown in our future.
